come on Moffat ties himself into knots at every opportunity and gets himself out of it by making it up as he goes along trampling over everything that has gone on before. it doesn't mean he is clever it just means its lazy storytelling done for convenience. or shock value. whevs.

I dont see this evidence of making it up as he goes along- everything ties together.
Even something as seemingly simple as the barn the War Doctor goes to in the anniversary episodes is tied into the series eight episode Listen.
The cracks in Time which appear in 11's very first episode are part of a three series long arc- series 5 the TARDIS explodes causing the cracks in time- series 6- the Silence appear trying to kill him and we find out about Rivers role in it and find out about Trenzalore and the Fall of 11. Series 7 we get to find out the significance of Trenzalore and who the Silence are and why they wanted to stop hm getting there by blowing up the TARDIS- that seems well planned to me, not made up as he goes along.

The distinction between improvisational writing and the setting of predetermined story-arcs seems to me to be a subtlety that lies outside of our grasp to know for a certainty.

The apparent difference between the two as far as what the material in question looks like is a negligible difference that borders on non-existence, at least for our purposes.

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

It has to be both I think- its the nature of writing serial tv.
For example we know from statements made by Capaldi that Moffat has already outlined to him where series 9 is going and what the ideas and arc for it are.
So in that sense its planned out- but then things happen, such as Matt changing his mind and leaving sooner than expected or Coleman doing the opposite and changing her mind and staying.
In those cases changes have to be made out of necessity that cannot have been preplanned.
Smiths final episode is a good example of this- Moffat originally thought he had an entire other series to wrap up the Trenzalore story line then suddenly found himself in the position of having to wrap it all up in one episode. That sort of thing no-one can legislate for.

So you have to have a plan, an arc and a narrative to follow and Moffat clearly has that- but it also has to be flexible enough that it can undergo sometimes dramatic last minute changes for reasons outwith the writers control. Its the nature of the beast (and thats before taking into account BBC execs deciding to cut the budget out form under him ect)

Capaldi continues to impress- not just for his portrayal of the Doctor but for how he treats the part as something larger than can have a real positive effect on peoples lives.
Yesterday he took time out from filming to drop by a Childrens Hospice Ty Hafan in Wales-

"The Time Lord himself, Peter Capaldi, took time out from saving the universe to stop by and meet some delighted families in the hospice.
The Doctor was fantastic, spending lots of time with everyone present. He created Doctor Who drawings for all the children and even made time to promote Children's Hospice Week.
Thanks so much for visiting us Peter!"

Reminds me of Hartnell and how he used to play up the role whenever kids saw him. Or Tom Baker- but not seen that since classic era.
Matt and David were good with the young fans, but they werent the Doctor in that way for them full on- I love it. Very Happy

Good decision frrm the Beeb (for once) and one can only hope it puts to rest (though i I doubt it) the nonsense claims the show is losing viewers when its not.
Now if they can just get Capaldi to sign on for at least those five years I'll be dancing in the my kilt! :carrot:

(Wonder if the Beebs decision has anything to do with Who moving into top spot for overseas sales through BBC Worldwide now Top Gear is dead in the water)
