Re: Music [3]
Are you saying "If this is the kind of bland pointless dreck I need to write I don't want to bother"? Because that reaction makes sense to me.
EDIT: Maybe I should have said "I kind of like it, but realize it's bland pointless dreck that has been done to death, so why bother?"
Very different from Schubert thinking that after Beethoven there was nothing left worth saying. I thought you were having this second reaction to the Byrds song, and I just couldn't see it.

Re: Music [3]
I always draw upon real life for inspiration. I recently wrote a song called "Demons in the darkness" about childhood fears about the dark and monsters under the bed,in the closet. Purely fiction but reality based... I don't tend to do the whole love song thing since its been done to death. I prefer more unconventional subject matter. One of the ballads I wrote has a very beautiful haunting melody which one would think is about love but the lyrics are about dying after living a long full life.
sometimes the best way to write a song or lyrics is to look inside and from your experiences. I tend to write a lot of darker stuff but that is my Edgar Allen Poe influence I guess

THIS is the perfect rock song for me, well this one and most Beatles songs. This guy is a great singer and SO underrated. Love his version a bit more than the original

That's prettty cool. Though for some reason I always prefered Ronnie Lanes songs in the Faces.

No, I'm saying it's a beatiful song. But I don't make any pretense as to it's genre. It's a silly love song. Like the Elton John song you mentioned. Still, it's a beatiful melody I'd say. A bit like the Beethoven example, but not quite..
"I'd like to love you.." not "I love you." Perhaps it's a small thing, but I think it strikes at the heart of love. You can't force it on someone. Oh, who knows. Maybe I'm just projecting.

Re: Music [3]
Well...depends on how you read it. If 'love you' is seen as a carnal act, it sort of changes things. Or maybe they simply changed the words to make it fit the melody. I suppose I'm not reading as much into the song as you are.

Halfwise wrote:I'm rather underwhelmed the Byrds' song. It's sort of there and gets the job done, but it doesn't catch you the way 'Your Song' by Elton John does, for example. Not sure why that particular song by the Byrds intimidated you, Blue. I think you should aim for a more distinctive voice.
I have to agree with Halfy on this. But I'm not entirely sure what the real issue is here, lyrics or music (maybe it's both). The music in the Byrds song is really static, reminds me of early Beatles. Parts of it even remind me of Nights in White Satin by The Moody Blues (just little moments here and there). But The Moody Blues blows them out of the water in terms of music and lyrics.
Although the lyrics in the chorus are blasé "Oh, how I'll love you...etc.", the music makes up for it with the gradual crescendo and the sustained notes in the melody. Not even to mention the other lyrics in Nights in White Satin. Very poetic, and part of a whole on a programmatic album.
And as long as I have an opportunity to bring Schubert into a conversation about love songs.
Now that's a love song. Brooding, private, moody, unsure, torn. That's a love song. Sein Kuß! What drama! Gives me chills every time!

Re: Music [3]
Love the Moody Blues, they always had feeling in their stuff. Some of the other prog type bands had the chops but lacked on emotion like the Moody Blues did

Moody Blues are great. Saw Justin Hayward on PBS a couple months ago, sounds just as great as he does on that recording above.

Re: Music [3]
My brother has been listening to a lot of classical music lately, so when I went to visit him a week or two ago and wanted to have something to contribute to the conversation, I namedropped Philip Glass because I remembered bungo talking about him. My brother hadn't heard of him but I saw him again just the other day and apparently he's now well on his way to becoming a Glass fan himself. I just wanted to share this for bungo's sake.
Re: Music [3]
my son has been playing bass with Classical music like Beethoven, Grieg, and Mozart... Super talented kid

Well, I tried to be emotive as I could. Plus it's very difficult when you don't the have distinct timbres of the voices and violin. You have to make a lot of your own decisions about what you want to do where and why. (Plus the score only gives you so much to go off of; some dynamic markings, slurs, but that's about it.)

Re: Music [3]
Apparently while I was busy with life Philip Glass released the rest of his twenty etudes.
Which means they are now published and I can get the sheet music! (But they're currently on back order. )
