for Halfy and Amarie (and anyone else that wants to watch film 1 and catch up) when do you fancy watching DoS? }}

I can watch it anytime the second half of this week starting late Thursday afternoon.

For those who haven't seen it, it's quite satisfying seeing a version of the Hobbit that actually (for the most part) sticks to the book. No eye-rolling, no throwing things at the palantir in rage. worth sticking somewhere for future watching.

You might want to rewatch the new version of UJ too if you have chance-failing that check the opening to the film and the section from after the good morning conversation till Thorin arrives, Bilbo leaving, troll scene, Rivendell section, goblin town and the finale at trees for major changes over previous version and which help keep everything in line with my edit of DoS and story themes and tone. }}

Any of those work for me. But I keep hoping we'll get someone else to join, and that's harder if it's tonight.

A wise choice even if I do say so myself, PJ's would only put them off Tolkien for life!! - jut make sure to download the latest version of UJ not the two half version as its not up to scratch and is missing stuff thats important and has some stuff that shouldnt be there at all!.}}

Yes, 8 pm london time tonight is too early for me today. Friday or saturday it would work, in which case I have a slight preference for saturday.

2h 30min long. Perhaps waiting for the weekend is a better idea.

Thanks Petty. I'd like to join you folks but I suspect I'd have to print the film out on cards frame by frame, and then run my thumb over the top of the deck to make the pictures move.
It's not really the same experience....

Just watched Crabbitmeister’s re-edit of The Hobbit (part one). Only winced extremely once; other than a lot of small winces. Not even Petty can prune everything crappy out without their being nothing left at all.

Tomorrow: I’ll watch Crabbitmeister’s part 2 (which is film 2+3 as one movie, kinda). It seems an impossible task to make it rise above abysmal, but have to say, his edit of Film 1 was A+. Had a poor movie to work with but did very well. Almost enjoyed it...loosely speaking...sort of....

I have never seen Film 3. I heard it was more odious than Film 2. A great achievement if so...if it is at all possible. Wish me luck, friends. I might suffer from spontaneous combustion tomorrow! Petty is no real friend of mine. He basically insists I watch it!

I honestly don't know if Ozhobbitstan is ahead or behind the rest of the world, timewise. But "tomorrow" is still friday, so you shall see it ahead of Amarie and myself. I myself can't imagine how Petty can pull the acceptable out of what PJ handed us for the second half of the book, but would be curious to hear if you think he pulled it off.

It's almost a shame you won't have the PJ original to compare too - will not appreciate the full miracle Petty pulls off.

As to film 3 being more odious than 2- well if you remember how odious 2 was and then double it in odiousness, give it a longer running time so PJ can fit extra odiousness in there, then you are part of the way to understanding just how odious film 3 is, or rather was!
However despite my best efforts I cannot guarantee you won't combust, its hot upide down afterall its probably just a daily risk like getting eaten by giant spiders or having angry koalas drop on your head   }}

It’s a shame I am being forced to watch any of it, to be honest. In one sense, Petty is a horrid bully, but on the other hand, it must surely be less worse than having the original to face AND then Petty’s efforts! So I think of Petty as more Attila the Hun than Adolf Hitler on this. Glass half full, or quarter full more likely!

All I can say is, I will watch your damned edited Jackson horror later today...most likely....maybe... Yes, that’s all I can say.

I'll be rewatching the first half tonight in preparation for the big reveal of the second half tomorrow. I enjoyed this first half, actually.

When I first saw it, I thought it good enough to watch it a second time, then realised I had been too kind the first time. I think I had really wished it was better than it was. Admittedly, the earliest parts and much of the Gollum scene I thought quite okay.

Having watched Petty’s edit, and seen some stuff from the extended version which I had not seen previously, I do wonder if the parts I thought okay were due to Toro. Some seemed uncharacteristically close to the book to seem obviously Jacksonian.

First half as in Petty's edit.  I will admit to having watched the original fllm several times, mainly to compare to ordinary flat screen to 3D to High Resolution.  Saw no reason to watch it in anything except the cheapest format.
