Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits [4]
Yeah, it's a shame. Particularily as several of the actors show, when they get an opportunity to express themselves, seemingly almost by accident between the cgi blows, show that they certainly have the ability to contribute something meaningful. I would almost go as far as saying they did a pretty good job on the casting side of things. It was how they utilized them that was the problem.

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits [4]
One of the thing I think the edits does is improve the performances.
Obviously I dont mean the performances are different in my edit somehow- just that when you focus the structure on the story, and on a central character, it makes the performances more dominant and you focus more on them as a viewer and on character motivations than you do when those moments are fleeting ones in a sea of cgi action.

Man, you're making me excited to see those edits. I need to remain apathetic though. Jackson pulled out my heart with these movies.

I absolutely agree. Even on your first rough edits, when you hadn't sculpted some of the narrative gaps back together yet, I was impressed how much stronger some of the performances felt.
I'm thinking that journeyman actors like Freeman and McKellen probably have a certain theoretical movie in mind when they read a script, and they pitch their performances to fit into that as far as tone and energy. Then everything else got amped up in post production, leaving their performances feeling a bit weak in comparison. How could they have known?

good point Dave. Freeman in particular is brilliant at subtle micro gestures as seen in Fargo and Sherlock, sometimes he doesn't need dialogue at all, its all in a twitch or a blink. But in Fargo its believable and natural and not surrounded by bombast so we can appreciate his portrayal, Bilbo in TH gets drowned out by the louder brasher Dwarves in particular and the loud and brash everything else.

I'll have to watch Fargo just to see Freeman do a "Minnesota nice" accent.

He really hams up his Minnesota accent. It was the biggest thing I didn't like about the series, but I did like the work he did with his character apart from that.

Its a very odd accent, I cant quite get the hang of it. So I cant tell whether Freeman does it well or not. It sounds kind of Dutch or Scandawegian, probably not but that's what it reminds me of.

You're exactly right, Mrs Figg!
During the late 19th and early 20th century thousands of ships full of immigrant farmers from Norway, Sweden and the lowland German States sailed directly from the Old Country, up the St Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes to Duluth Minnesota, where vast acreages of some of the richest farmland in all of the Americas was essentially free for the taking (due to a recent genocide/relocation of the Dakota people which we prefer not to talk about.... )
The resulting accent has been entertaining the rest of our nation ever since.

It seems to have taken on a life of it's own while you were away. You might have to whatch it closer in future.

Petty, I can tell you as a former teacher that this is just what happens when you step out of the classroom.

Petty is teaching us? Does that mean there's an exam at the end of this?

Considering who the teacher is, I'll probably end up buying all the rounds as well.

Yes there bloody well will be!
"Considering who the teacher is, I'll probably end up buying all the rounds as well."- Blue
Lets just say that by way of a helping hand I will give you an early heads up on a likely multiple choice question- Whose round is it? a- mine b- still mine c- mine again.
Worth 100 marks you answer that one right.
