Re: Tales of Home [6]
No, I dont like nuts, or ritionals. Besides how do you know its proper food and safe to eat if you haven't first bludgeoned it to death with a buckie bottle, slit its throat bled it out into a bucket for black pudding, skinned it, de boned it, put its origins aside for later haggis making, and then carelessly put it in the fridge where the Thing that lives in there immediately eats it and makes an emboldened bid for freedom!

Re: Tales of Home [6]
We had an exhibition last summer of some burials that were found in my town of Anglo Saxon bodkins. Loved it, very interesting ! there were speakers set up with men & women speaking in Anglo Saxon, there were things that were found in some of the burial sites like really beautifully made glass drinking vessels, amazing little flower shaped beads, Jewelry & weapons. There were some skeletons & 2 reconstructions, one of a man & one of a woman. Scientist worked out several things about these bodkins, diseases they had, the food they ate. the age of their deaths etc.
Sorry, gotta zoom out again.

that's spooky, I don't expect ancient people to look just like us.

Amazing they can piece together that information from the remains. I knew they could tell the age from the bones, had no idea they could figure out their diet.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
That is very interesting!
A question, Mrs Figg.
It's often seemed to me that the faces and body types of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures can still be seen walking the streets of Greece and Italy today.
Is it really so unexpected that ancient Anglo Saxons are still walking among us as well?

I agree with Figgy, It does seem odd to think of Ancient man being no different in looks than us today. That bloke looks way to modern ?

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Yet here's the Stonehenge guy from 3000 years before that. Humans don't seem to change much over a few thousand years.

it just seems odd that they look so modern. I guess I imagine ancient people to look mysterious and special, as if they should have some mystical Otherness. its a bit of a let down to know they look like the guy from Homebase.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Drop in the ocean- modern Homo sapiens who looked just like us have been knocking about since at least 40,000bc.
They reckon if you took a newborn baby from 40,000 years ago and raised it in the present day it would be indistinguishable in any way physically from a modern human or in potential.

Deep breaths Norc- and buckie thats the key here.
Failing that just remember lots of exciting things await you, new things, trust me there is a reason us old buffers like to reminisce about our 20's- its because you rarely get to have so much fun again- no longer a child, not quite expected to be as responsible as an adult- make the most of it it doesn't come again.

It's the hairstyle and raffish stubble. No idea how they wore their hair, but if they had it down to his shoulders with a scraggly beard you'd think he'd look right. Very likely they did care about grooming, though.

Norc - what Petty said.
It's nice setting up shop on your own, putting your own slant on your place. It typically looks pristine for a few months at least before it starts going to seed.
