The wind was blowing over 50 knots this morning. It's supposed to blow up to 80 knots tonight (150 km/hr). We're preparing to lose the electric grid for a while....

'According to WWF figures, wind turbines produced an estimated 982,842 MWh of electricity during October 2014. That's enough to meet 3,045,000 UK homes, or 126 percent of Scotland's entire residential demand.'
Unfortunately they feed into the UK national grid and England nicks most of it!

Re: Tales of Home [6]
I was in Pennsylvania last night visiting a friend, and the rain turned to snow on the way up. Then this morning I noticed it wasn't snowing anymore up there, but as I went south, I found the snow had beaten me home. Fortunately it's not so much as to make driving difficult though, especially since they salted the shit out of the roads.
Re: Tales of Home [6]
Well, the tail end of the storm has reached us. Not sure what all the fuss was about. Bit of wind and rain... think those Northerners aren't as tough as they like to think!!
Re: Tales of Home [6]
We sucked all the vigour out of it
On the subject of wind turbines saw this in the news today-
'Carbon emissions were cut by a record 12 million tonnes in Scotland last year thanks to the renewable electricity industry.
"Renewable energy in Scotland is doing exactly what it was designed to do - creating jobs, securing our energy supplies and, most importantly, reducing our carbon emissions to help limit climate change."
Speaking from the UN's climate change conference in Lima, Peru, Mr Banks added: "That renewables in Scotland are now helping to displace almost a million tonnes of climate pollution every month is proof that a renewable power sector is the foundation of a truly low carbon economy - keeping the lights on, creating jobs and cutting emissions."
Different figures released last month showed renewables had overtaken nuclear to become the main source of electricity in Scotland for the first time.-BBC
So much for all the oil industry and it right wing friends scare mongering that wind power was inefficient, didn't work and couldn't provide the power.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
.... this story is coming from a pro-wind farm person though. He isn't going to say 'nah, was a waste of time and money.'
Wind turbines on their own are not the answer as they rely on something.... the wind! There needs to be a mix of renewable sources with something that can be relied upon when the power output of the others drops. Nuclear is probably the answer right now although shouldnt be long term.
Until this is sorted out, hybrid and fully electric cars are a waste of time as it takes about the same, if not more, energy to be produced in the first place which currently comes from fossil fuels and therefore is worse for the environment.
Question is, will people moan more about tax rises when oil revenue drops or the quality of air and impacts on the environment that they cannot really feel?

Re: Tales of Home [6]
He is pro wind, but he is only responding to the official figures on how much has been generated- even if this guy never said a word we still produce enough electricity by wind alone to power ever home in Scotland.
And its only part of the low carbon energy we produce, there is hydro too and its about to go through a massive long term expansion project, and if they can figure it as a commercial endeavour wave offers 24 hour a day every day of the year power too. The tides never stop, there are always waves, every minute of every day.
And we still have nuclear and oil backing it all up- Scotland is energy rich.
Or did you think Westminster fought so hard to keep us in the Union because they really like us?
Plus the turbines produce more energy when it is windy than we can use, so its stored in massive batteries for when the wind is not blowing.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
I thought they kept Scotland because we are all 'better together.'
London subsidises the whole country anyway. You should be sending us our energy!

Re: Tales of Home [6]
London doesn't subsidise the rest of the Uk- we have the current austerity because the City of London just bankrupt the country.
But hey, banker bonuses are up, higher than ever before, so they are ok.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
The city of London didnt bankrupt the U.K!!!! The fucking people who borrowed more than they could played a big part as did those who voted in governments that encouraged it all.
And yes, London does. Money that is spent here is far exceeded by the money generated! Obviously doesn't mean it subsidises everywhere as some places manage their money with competence.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
And who lent all that money to people who couldn't afford to pay it back?
Who got rid of all the regulations that previously prevented it happening?
Yup the city of London through lobbying their city chums in Parliament.
As to blaming the voters- like they had a choice- Labour who deregulated the banks, or the Tories of the time who said Labour weren't deregulating the banks enough! Shit and shitter is not a choice.
And who bailed all those private banks out? Working people through their taxes and having all their services cut not to mention public sector price freezes and massive job cuts.
And who got the huge million pound reward bonuses as a result of this calamity? Yup the bankers! The very people who caused it in the first place by gambling all the money away on get rich quick schemes that only got them rich and screwed absolutely everyone else.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Well... that is blame culture on show. The bankers fault it is! And probably all of us with our million pound bonuses too!
Re: Tales of Home [6]
Well it didn't happen spontaneously of its own accord from nothing did it?
It happened for reasons- and those reasons had bugger all to do with the ordinary working people who have been punished by it and asked to pay for it.
Whilst those who were a part of the problem happening in the first place- the international banking system and the politicians that supported it walk away richer than ever.
As to the blame game- thats an easy one to resolve- just take a look at the legislation and focus of politics since the collapse. Count how many bills have been passed to curb bonuses and the city- none on bonuses, very few on regulating the city. Our Chancellor even blocked an EU bill to cap them. How much legislation has been passed targeting and cutting public sector workers? The unemployed? The disabled? Immigrants? Almost all of the legislation since as been focused on taking money from the poorest in society so the richest don't get hit.
In fact by a strange coincidence the amount of money given to the banks in bail outs and bonuses is almost exactly the same amount of money taken form the poorest in 'austerity measures.'
They just moved billions from the poorest and most vulnerable in society and gave it to the richest.
Doesn't exactly seem fair. Revolutions have been sparked by a lot less than this.
Let me turn it round on you- who do you think is responsible for the economic collapse- and who do you think should have to suffer the consequences of it most?
