Bluebottle wrote:Ah, ok. I guess I would prefer the harsh or bad three month one to the on and off one, but I guess it also depends on what you're used to and prepeared for.
Well the on and off winter doesn't last that long either, but it does get really annoying not knowing how much you need to wear to stay warm (that gets even worse in spring and autumn). It does tend to get cold (relatively) in January and February regardless of whether there's snow on the ground though, so the snow at least makes the cold worth it. At least, that was my thought process before I started having to drive all through the winter.
Re: Tales of Home [6]
Snow tires definitely helps. Driving without those in winter..
I guess were kind of used to it with the whole winter thing. You kind of go into winter mode and wear winter clothes and it's just a part of life. I really hated it last year when we had a properly poor one.

It was really slippery here last week, and me walking around in jogging shoes was sliding all over the place.
Managed not to fall though. I have had some training at that at this point.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Snow tires are usually a waste of money here. Even when it snows regularly, they salt the shit out of the roads and plow pretty efficiently. My dad's house is at the bottom of a hill in a somewhat out-of-the-way development, though, so I might have to make that investment this year...
Re: Tales of Home [6]
Yeah, I guess it's a bit of an investment.
I think you pretty much have to have them here, but the City here does really well at clearing the road and salting and gravelling too. So, I think we get off pretty lightly. In other parts of the country driving with chains on your wheels is pretty commonplace through winter.

The beards are working on a plan for hitting us hard when we are expecting them the least.

This isnt another of those 70's feminist things is it?
(All together now!)
She lived in a lighthouse,
It smelt like a f***ing sh*t-house,
And the hairs on her dicky-di-do,
The hairs on her dicky-di-do
Went down to her knees!
(or ex-army scout leader taught us that one, aged 14, sitting round the camp fire with a few beers- those were the days. Now he'd probably be arrested for child abuse )

At least you get sleet and ice, down here in the South it's just cold and dry for no apparent reason
