Re: Future releases [2]
I'm so glad that there's someone else on this forum who liked Pacific Rim as much as I did! It was a long and lonely fight trying to convince other people to give it a chance.
The second Guardians trailer doesn't seem quite as comedic as the first, but it's still one of my most anticipated movies for the rest of the year.

Re: Future releases [2]
I genuinely hope there is a Pacific Rim 2 in the works.
I'm surprised they let us hear Groot speak. Not surprised about hearing Rocket, though.

Just got back from Godzilla. Gonna have to give it a "D" for disappointing.
I wasn't even hyped about it.

Re: Future releases [2]
- Godzilla Review and Thoughts:
- I don't even know where to start in order to explain what an abject disappointment this movie was, and what a chore it was to sit through.
I went into this movie thinking that Bryan Cranston was going to be the main character. Boy, was I ever mislead by those trailers. I know a big thing these days is that marketing departments like to spell out the entire plot for the audience in a movie trailer (see the recent How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer), but I feel like I was flat out lied to in this situation.
I really feel like Cranston was used as a selling point for this movie, even though he's in it for less than 30 minutes (a rough guesstimate). Instead who do we have to cheer for? The family of Cranston's character's son that has the combined charisma of a popsicle stick.
I feel like now I need to address the issue of expectations and the Kaiju genre. What do I want when I go to a monster movie? Scratch that, a movie with big fucking huge monsters. And yes, there are three kaiju in this movie: Godzilla, and two MUTO's (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), and no, the flying one was not Mothra.
So what am I expecting from a kaiju movie? I am expecting: a focus on the monsters, a focus on action between the monsters, less to little emphasis on human drama or tragedy, and most important (for me at least) less seriousness. This is supposed to be fun, right? Giant monsters destroying cities? Sounds fun, oh, but wait, post-9/11. Oops. Gotta go Dark Knight on this, I guess.
What did I get from this movie? A focus on the human element, and if they're at least going to do this, make your characters interesting, and make me want to see them survive. Less emphasis on action between the kaiju. There is a scene where Godzilla is about to engage one of the MUTO's in Hawaii, and what does the filmmaker do? Cuts to the protagonist's home in San Francisco to show his kid and wife watching the news footage of it. Yes, we see news coverage of the fight, not the fight itself. We were right fucking there and you cut away right when I needed something important to this genre to keep me engaged. I shit you not, this is not the only time this bait-and-switch happens in the movie. There are at least two other times. (There's also a not-so-subtle plug for the LG G Flex during this scene. Well, Hawaii is being destroyed, but at least I know the protagonist's wife has the latest smartphone. )
Yeah, sure, you can argue that they played with audience expectations in Pacific Rim, by just teasing a bunch of disaster porn with the destruction of the Goldengate Bridge. But that happened at the beginning, during the prologue that set up the story, and it gave us a taste of what was to come. And when there was action between the Jaeger's and the Kaiju, GdT had the common sense to focus on it. And they delivered a full-on battle at the beginning of the story.
I don't give a shit about these plain-as-vanilla cardboard cutouts, I WANT TO SEE THE MONSTERS FIGHT. HOW HARD COULD IT BE TO SCREW UP? IT'S LIKE SCREWING UP MASHED POTATOES! YOU BOIL THE WATER, THEN POUR THE PACKET...
Bottom line is: if there's a fight between two or three fucking huge monsters, show us that. Don't show us people looking at it, or watching it on TV. FUCK
Okay, so that's what I expect from a kaiju movie. I expect two very important things from a Godzilla movie: 1. He uses his blue flame, and his spikes light up. 2. (And this is the most important) I need to care about Godzilla.
I got one of these things (hint: it's the one that the special effects could accomplish). And while it was cool to see the final battle (when they did focus on it) and have Godzilla use his flame and eventually defeat the MUTO's, it just felt hollow, like I didn't care. Might have been that I had been dragged down by everything else that was wrong with the movie, but whatev.
Oh, there's also this awkward moment at the end of the movie that would make Sam Raimi's Spider-Man cringe. All the survivors are in a stadium finding their loved ones, signing up to receive aid and what not, and they show the news on a big jumbo-tron and it shows Godzilla leaving the city (after two death fake-outs (he's cheating death one two many times in this movie)) and I shit you not, the title on the jumbo-tron says: "Godzilla, King of the Monsters - Savior of Our City?" Jesus H.
TL;DR
Don't see Godzilla. Pacific Rim is more enjoyable and doesn't feel like a chore to watch. Or heck, maybe watch one of the old Godzilla movies.

Re: Future releases [2]
King Kong was so ass. I'd forgotten just how long the monster sequence(s) in the middle was; I didn't even recognize some of the set pieces in that video.
Re: Future releases [2]
I think some of it was taken from the extended edition (which I haven't seen). Like the troops in the back of that truck with the "anti-ape" propaganda, and that underwater fight sequence.

Re: Future releases [2]
It's only 13 minutes longer. Isn't that the same amount as the new footage in AUJ?

Re: Future releases [2]
Yeah. I think with AUJ he just had less to say, but with King Kong he'd normalized the over three hour runtime with LOTR so he was probably allowed to throw more stuff into the theatrical edition than he would have several years earlier.

i am looking forward to this this is the second trailer
king kongs sucked big time...

Re: Future releases [2]
I wasnt to badly let down with PJs King Kong, not until the fooking dinosaurs turned up, & the ridiculous crashing thru the forest etc. Actually, the scenes with Kong crashing down a precipice, swinging on vines, whilst fighting 2 dinosaurs, was not unlike the fooking ridiculous crashing in The fooking Hobbit

Is it just me, or does the "v" instead of "vs" make it sound more like a court case than anything else? Especially with "justice" in the subtitle.
Re: Future releases [2]
Strange title, but then again we're living in an age where "The Battle of the Five Armies" is considered an acceptable movie title.

Well, actually it makes sense. DC having the Justice League and all.

Re: Future releases [2]
Yeah, I'm aware of WB/DC's attempts at making Justice League (they've been trying to get these plans off the ground for years). I just find the new title kinda lol. I didn't think they'd actually go with "Batman v Superman".
As a non-comic reader, I'm not super invested in it like those who are mourning Superman being reduced to second billing or wishing it was called "World's Finest", though I can see where they are coming from.

Re: Future releases [2]
"World's Finest" would have been a worse title IMO. World's finest what? Five-star restaurant?
I probably won't see it; watched about half of Man o' Steel online and lost interest. But it will be interesting to see what they do with Batman now that the Nolan version is retired.
