Excellent post on Gallifrey Base amidst a pedantic Whovian style argument over the Doctors numbering.
Officially Capaldi is the 12th Doctor, but the 13th regen.
Some folk argue the War Doctor earns back the name Doctor in Day of the Doctor however and should be counted as a full Doctor, pushing Capaldi to number 13 and bumping everyone from 9 on up a place.
But I thought this response from a poster called Merkuri hit the nail on the head for me-

"The thing is, we only saw the very end of the War Doctor. He had hundreds of years of fighting. Even if he remembers that he didn't destroy Gallifrey, he was probably directly responsible for thousands of deaths. I mean, pointing a gun and pulling the trigger type of responsible.

The fact that he didn't blow up Gallifrey doesn't undo that. While he was doing those things, he didn't think of himself as The Doctor - not on the surface, at least. Deep down in his heart he still was, which is why The Moment was able to pull that name out of his head, and it's what she reminded him during Day of the Doctor. At that point in his life, the Doctor knows everything that happened that last day of the Time War. He knows that the War Doctor helped save Gallifrey, and earned back the title of Doctor, at least for that one day. But he still has to remember everything that he did before then, between his regeneration on Karn and his experience with the Moment.

When he did those things "in the name of peace and sanity", he didn't want to call himself the Doctor. Now, talking to Clara, he still doesn't want to say "the Doctor did those things." To help himself live with what he's done, he put the War Doctor in a special category inside his head. For that one regeneration, he wasn't the Doctor, because "Doctor" doesn't mesh with the things he did.

Day of the Doctor was a redemption story, true, but remember that the Doctor is one man. The same man was there in that story three times. It wasn't the War Doctor, specifically who was redeemed. It was the Doctor himself - the whole man.

So the War Doctor gets his honorary Doctor title at the end, but he really wasn't a Doctor in terms of how he acted, so he doesn't get the privilege of inserting himself into the numbering. He's a Doctor, but he's "The War Doctor", not "The Ninth Doctor"."

Well, apparently slapping the doctor is just harmless fun, necessary to the story and as family friendly as short skirts and threatening a woman with rape. Who are we to judge the wisdom of the script writers?
