Post by Eldorion Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:41 pm

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the release of two of the best hip hop albums not just of the '90s, but of all time. Wu-Tang Clan's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and A Tribe Called Quest's third album, Midnight Marauders. The former is memorable for its sparse, lo-fi hardcore beats, its mix of street topics and obscure martial arts movie references in the lyrics, and having no fewer that nine rappers in the group, eight of whom appear on at least two tracks. The latter is arguably ATCQ's masterpiece, featuring jazz-influenced beats, a by and large lighthearted tone (reminiscent of the pre-gangsta rap '80s), and Afrocentric lyrics.

Two classics by two of the greatest rap groups who ever formed like Voltron, released on the exact same day.

There's a few musicall bits and bobs of mine around the internet, but they are all rather old so I thought I'd share this song some friends of mine just released instead.

They won a thing called Årets Urørt in Norway a couple of years ago and have had their ups and downs since then, but just released their second album.

The music video is a bit weird, but I quite like the song.

Sorry Eldo, I just don't see any signs of talent in that Wu-Tang Clan example.  Any one of us here could write more interesting lyrics, come up with a more intriguing way to deliver the lyrics rather than just braying them out, back it up with instrumentation some one might want to listen to....I just don't get why anyone would want to listen to this or why the 20 minutes of practice they probably put in before recording is worth paying for.  Shrugging

You've posted other examples which seem to put hip-hop in better light, this seems to me to be lowest common denominator worst of the lot.  Yet I'd like to understand....there must be something of value if someone of your intellect can get excited by it.  What am I missing?

Just the opinion of an old fart I guess.

The Midnight Marauders album actually seems interesting on the other hand. Nod

Edit: MM started out quite interesting, then slid into the same yapping with occasional interesting flourishes. If they had done more of the vocal layering and ran with it they would have had something. Can't make myself listen to enough of it to see if they take it somewhere, unfortunately. It may have promise.

Two reasons for posting this: Never too much Zevon in my opinion, and the song reminds me of Petty Laughing

The song is fast-paced, so here are the lyrics to make it easier to follow. A good example of the man's wits Very Happy

I started as an altar boy, working at the church
Learning all my holy moves, doing some research
Which led me to a cash box, labeled "Children's Fund"
I'd leave the change, and tuck the bills inside my cummerbund

I got a part-time job at my father's carpet store
Laying tackless stripping, and housewives by the score
I loaded up their furniture, and took it to Spokane
And auctioned off every last naugahyde divan

I'm very well aquainted with the seven deadly sins
I keep a busy schedule trying to fit them in
I'm proud to be a glutton, and I don't have time for sloth
I'm greedy, and I'm angry, and I don't care who I cross

I'm Mr. Bad Example, intruder in the dirt
I like to have a good time, and I don't care who gets hurt
I'm Mr. Bad Example, take a look at me
I'll live to be a hundred, and go down in infamy

Of course I went to law school and took a law degree
And counseled all my clients to plead insanity
Then worked in hair replacement, swindling the bald
Where very few are chosen, and fewer still are called

Then on to Monte Carlo to play chemin de fer
I threw away the fortune I made transplanting hair
I put my last few francs down on a prostitute
Who took me up to her room to perform the flag salute

Whereupon I stole her passport and her wig
And headed for the airport and the midnight flight, you dig?
And fourteen hours later I was down in Adelaide
Looking through the want ads sipping Fosters in the shade

I opened up an agency somewhere down the line
To hire aboriginals to work the opal mines
But I attached their wages and took a whopping cut
And whisked away their workman's comp and pauperized the lot

I'm Mr. Bad Example, intruder in the dirt
I like to have a good time, and I don't care who gets hurt
I'm Mr. Bad Example, take a look at me
I'll live to be a hundred and go down in infamy

I bought a first class ticket on Malaysian Air
And landed in Sri Lanka none the worse for wear
I'm thinking of retiring from all my dirty deals
I'll see you in the next life, wake me up for meals

Not his deepest, no Wink He wrote many songs that were just meant to be funny stories and just that. He could write anything and play everything, that's why I never get tired of his music Smile
