Nothing like fear to galavaniz the instinct for tribe. Safer whith those I know, those like me. Their ways are different. Their ways are therefore dangerous to my ways.

One hopes the internet is slowly but surely helping to break this down as we all find out that them over there are just like me over here, except they do some minor stuff different from me, but then so does my mate down the road.

Well put Very Happy Hopefully the Internet will help people wake up, but I'm not sure. I've yet to meet a racist who I've been able to reason with when talking about people of a different religion or colour, and I doubt whether I would have had any more luck had I said the same things to a racist on an Internet forum.

More indie music from my misspent 20's. Belle and Sebastian.

Takes me back to a time of excessive drinking and dabbling (and this is me saying that!) and severe hedonism that only comes with being young, having money in your pocket and thinking your immortal. Funny that I could not in good concious recommend such activity and consider myelf quite lucky to have come out of relatively whole (some of my contempories were not so lucky) and yet I also can't help but look back on that mad time with a good deal of fondness and a sense of having been very alive for a brief period in a world that seemed to mean something at that time. Odd where music can carry you back to.

Sad Sad news at the passing of Peter Falk, best known as Columbo, the only US detective character that for me stands shoulder to shoulder with the greats like Holmes and Poirot and Marple. RIP Peter Falk. No more time for 'just one more thing'. Sad

The original and the best. Magrathean (they make planets you know) coast line designer Slartibartfast. Wonderful performance in this. The film version was BIll Nighy, a good actor but not as good as the original was in the role.

One of the few good things to come out of the Hollywood version- the Dolphin song. (Apart from Zooey Deschanel being unbelievably cute in it- just me?)

Fortunetly they also kept the superb original Journey of the Magi which has been the Hitchhikers theme since its inception.

A great jumping in point for Hitchhikers, in its original and best format- radio. Made after Douglas Adams untimley death and reunitng the original cast (bar a few time had claimed!) And best of all the original Ford, my favourite. Enjoy. Can't believe this is there. Very Happy

The Tertiary phase, witness the Krikket Wars.

Encryption is a "spell" Saradoc. It is probably wise to not think too "scientifically" or "mathematically" about it! Very Happy Though, the more the stronger might be my general explanation. (The efficacy of the spell at any time seems dependant on the ability of others to penetrate the mist. Hope that helps!)

And "put downs"? I'd label as "silly fun-making", definitely not stuff anyone should feel "put down" about. I'd be mortified if I thought any of my jokes actually offended anyone. (Indeed, PM me if anyone ever is offended. The point of what I do is entertainment, if folk are not entertained but hurt, then I need to know, it is never my intent to hurt. Serious debates, though, demand serious words, and punches may not alway be pulled. I give as I receive and expect no quarter).

(((((Mind you, Saradoc, sarcasm (the poorest form of wit) in serious debates is different, though it's an ill practice of mine. But - eegad! - I'm only mortal for Eru's sake!)))))

Back in the 1980's I saw a low budget British horror film, more psycholigical than blood and gore, called Paperhouse. And I've almost never met anyone else who has ever heard of it, for some reason it simply disappeared. I really liked it and now I've tracked it down to youtube of all places!
Here's the trailer and part one. I have no idea what this was rated at the time and I havent seen it over 20 years so memory as to content is vague- I suspect it would be a 15 these days, maybe even PG-13 the way things have been going but its scares are not in gore from what I can remember. I saw it when I was about 16, 17 I think.

I'm generally not a huge fan when the London Symphony orchestra do their covers of popular music, but somethings suit it more than others. Here's there version of a (partially) orchestrated original, Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds. (I kind of miss the disco funkyness of the original though).

I wonder if this had been the original release how the same groups that condemn heavy metal as evil and just a noise would have reacted. Metallica's Nothing Else Matters as interpreted by Apocalyptica.

And of course if the original was written by a genius or four transcribing it for orchestra aint so hard! LSO does the Beatles.

Yes I'm having a buckie and youtube night!
My pick of some Sex Pistols songs, choosen to demonstrate something underrated about them, the diverisity of their music and the amount of fun in it. Punk's sense of humour tends to be forgotten about. Also I've tired to choose the less well known ones.
These of course come with disclaimers, its the Sex Pistols, expect bad lanuage, dodgy subject matter and everything punk. Not for minors!!

1st up Bodies. (And yes someone thought it would be a good idea for the Sex Pistols to do a benefit gig for children- and they were right).

Next Sid's take on the classic My Way (and yes the girl in the video that he shoots is the girlfriend he shortly after this got arrested for the murder of-hah just noticed its been censored! no shooting of girlfriend, presumably even for punk it was considered bad tatse!).

This next one is much debated as to whether it counts as a Pistols song or not, its sung by the lead of Temple Tudor, but it appears on the soundtrack of the Pistols film. Either way I loved this as a kid, its so bonkers.

And lastly, and arguably the most offensive of them all, Friggin' in the Riggin'. You have been warned.

So much for the Sex Pistols just being four guys who never learned to play their instruments properly shouting into microphnnes!

I was literally just listening to Apocalyptica when I opened this thread. Very Happy They're pretty awesome and I almost got to see them a few months ago, but the show ended up being restricted to people over 21 (for alcohol-related reasons, presumably). Mad

I love their version of Enter Sandman! Very Happy

And these guys apply a similar method to Michael Jackson, which is also pretty cool.
