So reddit's not all bad, just most of it.  

I do follow Game of Thrones discussions on a couple of other forums that I'm a member of (though none are GOT-centric), but I don't post about it actively outside of the GOT thread here. Game of Thrones is one of a small handful of fantasies to come close to LOTR in my mind, but it's not the closest, and nothing truly compares to the amount of time I've invested in Middle-earth. Tolkien forums and the people I've met on them have been a big part of my life for the past five and a half years, and I don't see any other online subculture equalling that anytime soon, particularly since I don't spend (quite) as much time online as I used to.

I think Tolkien attracts a certain type of person, GOT attracts a certain type of person who loves Tolkien but wants more boobs n blood.

So what's closer to Tolkien than Game of Thrones, Eldo?

It's been noted that in terms of world creating Dune probably comes closest in creating a world that people believe in and become invested in. I can't think of anything else I've read that has the same feeling of believable depth.

after looking at Norc's Holiday photos I now want some blackberry pie and cream.    very very badly

its raining. A LOT. normally July is about 38 degrees, very hot, but its about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than normal, its been raining buckets nearly all month with lots of storms, its weird, not complaining because its nice and cool and easy to sleep at night not a hot and sweaty nightmare, but it is odd. never had a July like this in 20 years I have been here, but Italians say its never been like this in living memory.

I've had one fish (a tetra, forgot what kind) in a 10 gallon fresh water tank for about a year. The other day I get the itch to add more fish, so I go to the local pet store and get three beautiful tetra. Bring them home, and the one fish has just been a complete jack ass to them. I'm hoping things will stabilize soon, all he's doing is chasing them around, but it's enough to make me crabbit and feel sorry for the new fish.

What about the old fish?- thought he had the whole water world to himself, probably thought he was unique, the only fish in existence an then a bunch of off-water gatecrashers pile in- you get them no1 fish!!

Scottish Television are making me crabbit and their great idea to open the live player to all the country to watch the debate- so naturally its servers have overloaded and crashed the whole thing immediately

Is this like an actual formal debate or is it a typical televised political debate like in the 2010 general election?

Its a bit odd- I found a live stream- just in time for the ads    as its done with a moderator putting the questions and questions form the audience- but its not an election its a referendum, so its more about the arguments they put forth than the personalities, which election debates are more about.

You can try to watch it, google Scottish Television live, you may have to register but there is no charge, and it may not play if the servers are still oveloaded.

I'm getting an error message: "Segment security loading violation. Video playback not possible". I dunno if that has to do with me being outside the UK or something else (the servers?).

No idea- they claim for this one debate its open to watch anywhere in the world.   

Last segment got nicely heated- cross examination- Darling had Salmond looking ropey on the issue of currency and Salmond had Darling squirming trying to get him to answer Yes or No to the question - do you agree with David Cameron that Scotland could be a successful independent country?
Even the audience were shouting 'answer the question' after the fifth or sixth squirming attempt to get out of saying yes by Darling.
