coming out each morning in my edition of the PJ News- Orwell
Not sure what sort of mood that must send you off to work in!
"very Goon Show ish that line"- Blue
Yeah I am a fan of the Goon show, also a big fan of Round the Horne.
Always thought this Kenneth Williams song was very much in the humour of Forumshire - a joy of words, a lot of silliness, and more than a hint of naughtiness without ever being simply crude-
And the amazing they got away with it at the time (given you could get arrested still for homosexuality at the time)- Julian and Sandy from Round the Horne-
I think if Williams were still alive today, he'd write for the Archet Bugle.

Oh fa la la
Thick cinnamon sticks
in big cream buns
that came from France
overlund,
and apple strudel
with candy canes
stuck in the middle
when Joy Smith came
around to see us, Randy!
Oh tra la la
Oh cabbages
with jelly rolls
and sweetie melons
sucked quite whole
and chocolate starfish
in white sauce
with Fanny there
and of course
good old fashioned, Randy!
Oh farty ferry fa
lovely double buns
in juicy juice
and double breasted squab
in white runny mousse,
and carrot, parsnips
and asparagus,
and pretzels up
the blunderbus,
When Joy Smith comes
with Fanny, Dick and Randy.

Re: An Unexpected Journey as seen by Petty Tyrant
I'm aware of Kenneth Williams through Just a minute and a bit through Hancock. And of course his wonderfull Parkinson interviews.
Not heard the things you posted, though I have heard of them. Will see if I can get around to having a listen.

Re: An Unexpected Journey as seen by Petty Tyrant
Great stuff so far (particularly liked the account of Thranduil on his giant moose ), but I'm a little stuck on this bit:
How is it made pointless? Don't get me wrong, I think the movie botched this scene as it did pretty much everything else, I'm just a bit unclear on this point.“An adventure!” Bilbo said, realising this must be his new cue to get flustered and run indoors, “we don't want any adventures here today thank you. Good morning!” he turned to go in but paused and said, “Hey you were right, the whole good morning thing in this is totally pointless,”

Re: An Unexpected Journey as seen by Petty Tyrant
In the book the whole good morning thing is a joke playing on english manners.
At the end of it there is a punch line- where Gandalf acusses a flustered Bilbo of using 'good moring' to mean get lost.
Bilbo reacts like any good Brit would when he has politely insinuated you should leave and you rudely and blatantly point this out- he gets doubly flustered and embarrassed and in a desperate attempt to cover his embarrassment he invites Gandalf round to tea.
In the film PJ sets up the good morning conversation- but he leaves the point of it off- the entire ending where Gandalf calls Bilbo out and where Bilbo invites him to tea. Film Bilbo never does invite Gandalf to tea.

Ah, okay, gotcha. Thanks!
And, yeah, PJ really scraped the nuance out of this scene. But what else is new?

Re: An Unexpected Journey as seen by Petty Tyrant
Well, that certainly shut me up for a minute.
I thought someone would be proud.
Now why when I dig myself into holes do I keep digging deeper to try to get out?

Oh, I always take that into consideration. Well, at least after the first 10 times.
Strangely in talking about norcing we seem to have combined to norc Pettys thread again.
Well at least it'll give him a push towards the most crabbit award.

All the way from "Off Topic" to the "Creative Corner."
We could always move the conversation to the computer thread, I guess. If you want to take in any more sights.
