thanks RA glad you liked itRecoveryanonymous wrote:Wow great job with the poster, Figgs.
Despite being front and center, the eye naturally wants to gravitate to the others because Bilbo isn't doing anything.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
TORn has the third TV spot as an embed. It includes a little bit of new material not in the previous trailers (so SPOILERS, Norc. ).

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
I think the most significant part of the new TV spot to me is Gandalf's declaration that the Necromancer has been "preparing for war". There was some discussion over whether or not the shot of Orcs marching was from a flashback, the BO5A, or Dol Guldur. I leaned toward the Dol Guldur interpretation, so I may be biased, but I think the new TV spot lends support to that view.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Should we start up a DOS-spoiler free thread, then?
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
probably or just keep spoiler tags this thread says "possibly spoilery"
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Speaking about Spoliers someone did actually post a screencap of Smaug from the trailer blown up and cleared up-he dosen't at all resemble the Smaug I imagined from reading the book, but looks rather interesting nonethless.
Cumberbatch is going to own this film.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
I'm not sure I saw that image, could you post it? I'm definitely looking forward to Cumberbatch since the second full trailer.
And since this thread is already marked as spoilery I went ahead and created a spoiler-free thread so we don't have to click through endless spoiler tags in this one.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Cool, thanks. I think I might have seen that, but it's definitely a really good view of Smaug. Sin commented that he thinks Smaug looks two-legged, which might explain how they're doing the mocap with Bendydick.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Two legs could be an interesting spin on a dragon, they seem to be going all out making smaug a character not a beast, so maybe two legs will allow him to move more believably, and give enough room to have his wings be in a suitably impressive wing span.
Or alternatively Jackson though Tolkien's classic 'gaint shiny dragon' illustration wasn't cinematic enough, or maybe he took 'Smaug the worm' literally (depsite 'worm' being another word for dragon) and wants to make Smaug move more snakelike.
Who Knows?
After the fork monster from prometheus, and the rabbit wrangler from the smurfs I was half expecting Smaug to be a talking teapot on wheels.
Still it IS quite an impressive and convincing design, and more or less proof Smaug will speak literally...but it sure ain't Tolkien.

He does look rather snakelike in the trailer, either that or he has an extremely long neck.malickfan wrote:Or alternatively Jackson though Tolkien's classic 'gaint shiny dragon' illustration wasn't cinematic enough, or maybe he took 'Smaug the worm' literally (depsite 'worm' being another word for dragon) and wants to make Smaug move more snakelike.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
After watching that t spot, and the war stuff I am now convinced the time line has been seriously moved- and that the War in the North which was taking place during the War of the Ring has now been moved to the Hobbit time frame and is now the opening of the War of the Ring.
Maybe Dain will even end up dying too fighting at the front gate. And assault on Lorien and Lake Town would all be on the cards.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
I could see that happening I'm not sure I would be too annoyed-it would be pretty damn epic to see in 3D and at least give the film enough substance to be as long as Jackson will probabaly make it.
At this point I almost can't be arsed even comparing it to the book anymore, Jackson couldn't give a rats arse about canon, and since he made the films the wrong way round who knows what he has planned for the third film?
Since Connoly has stated he more or less has a last minute cameo, I wouldn't be surprised to see him killed off as another bastardised reference for the fans. We have yet to hear conformation Dain is related to Thorin in movie verse, so I wouldn't be surprised if Dwalin or Gloin takes his place as ruler of Erebor.

Imagine the scene...At the entrance of Erebor amongst the carnage. The BO5A has finished, Bilbo and Legolas are musing on the pig-headedness of Dwarves, Legolas turns round and looks down to stare into the grumpy face of a 'young' Dwarf with attitude. 'Greetings Master Elf, my name is Gimli, fancy a pint?'.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
That would make me vomit. All the idiots in the theater would be like "ooooh it's Gimli, fan service masturbation!" And I would roll my eyes and leave the theater, questioning whether or not I want to be a fan of Middle-earth stuff anymore.Mrs Figg wrote:Imagine the scene...At the entrance of Erebor amongst the carnage.
