Um, not my fault- whatever it is I've done this time! pale Or if it was I supply my usual excuse -that I was very drunk at the time! drunken

And Eldo the argument was not about wether or not you can like them both you cheeky devil! Evil or Very Mad It was wether the reboot had sold out the ST soul and Rodenberry's vision. (The answer is YES IT BLOODY HAS, in case you havent been keeping up)

And Mrs Figg if you like TNG then you cant help but to love DS9- same writers only they got even better and put more meat on eveything and made all the characters, including the secondary ones much fuller and rounder people than ever before.

Watched True Grit last night - yet another awesome "new" western Very Happy Not quite the film I expected it to be, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Great acting too Smile

Yes, it's a really good movie. Even my mom, who's a little old lady who normally hates westerns and violence loved it. It's a lot closer to the book than the old John Wayne version, with a strong dose of the Cohen Brothers' dark humor.
The young actress was amazing! That's really difficult dialog, and she has to carry pretty much every scene.

Her performance was impressive indeed; not only did she deliver all those heavy lines like an actor 15 years older than her, her acting was terrific too. Loved the humour as well, particularly a few of Matt Damon's lines Very Happy

Got to agree- one of those rare occasion when the new version exceeds the original (and not like the original was bad)- if I had one minor gripe with it (and you can count on me to find at least one!) was that I sometimes had trouble making out the dialogue.

Reboot Spock kept reminding me of Ashton Kutcher, or however his name is spelled. The characters were ok, the actors did an great job, but it didn't feel right. I got a horrible feeling at the end that they were going to remake all the original ST movies with a new "twist" since they now had a new parallel timeline to (ab)use. *shiver* My heart belongs to Picard and his gang. And original Star Wars.

In an earlier thread we had discussed the Star Trek 'reboot', and how it wasn't in fact Star Trek. It's clear the writers and director didn't really care about the characters.

Umm, err...you may want to be careful in some circles mentioning Star Trek and Star Wars in the same sentence.

The original and next generation Star Treks are an interesting comparison. Both have lots to love, but the almost self indulgent gravitas of the original pulls one in even more I think. Much like the original Dark Shadows: a very fine line between melodrama and farce which can only be found in the 60s.

Yes, nobody seems capable of it anymore. Every now and then the X-files would recreate the mood, and you could almost sense the writers giggling between the lines.

Returning to theatres in the UK, the US, and Australia (at least). I've somehow managed to never see this film but I already pre-ordered my tickets for the 50th Anniversary revival screening. The digitally restored version has gotten great reviews so far and I'm really looking forward to it. Very Happy

I hope you enjoy it Eldo. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

It's a slower, more emmersive narrative style than you see anymore, and it perfectly matches the epic visual style. In its time it took location shooting to a new level.

I got to see LoA in 70mm on a huge screen in Seattle when they remastered it for the 20th anniversary re-release, with rediscovered footage added (redubbed by O'Toole). I felt like I was roasting on that desert with them. Shocked

Edit: if they do it correctly there's an intermission of a specific length with a specific score. When it was first released it was a theatrical event!

A great film, just beautiuful and unfolds like a good novel as far as pace- which is why a modern audience might find it harder work maybe.
For me this period of film making, ending in the very early 80's, was the golden age of film narrative.
A time when they cared abut character, setting, atmosphere- even in a film like Alien, Bladerunner, even the Star Wars films- narrative was king, the effects and action supported the narrative and characters rather than replaced them.
In my view if Hollywood wants to save itself from tumbling attendance they should return to this style and to making films aimed at over 20's too would be a good idea.
If you look at the sort of tv drama people are watching, from Game to Mad Men, even Who or Downton Abbey, they are narrative, character driven pieces. This is what ultimately will keep people watching- all you can do with spectacle is try to keep topping it- exactly the problem the old Roman Circuses ran in to, I'm not sure if Hollywood has got as far having baboons rape people for entertainment but metaphorically its where they are heading.

Thanks Dave, I'll be sure to post my thoughts after I see it. Smile The screening is one day only October 4 so I'll have to wait. The hardest part might be getting excited without cracking and watching the film on DVD first. Razz

I'm excited to see the 4K digital restoration though. I recently watched Apocalypse Now for the first time, in part because Kendalf recommended it on here. I really liked it but I did find myself wishing I could have seen it in higher quality and on a bigger screen than my TV's Netflix app. Laughing

Tell us how you really feel, Petty! Very Happy

I've been trying to watch more old films since many of them are important but I didn't see many growing up. The old epics interest me in particular. I saw Ben-Hur a number of years ago and I really enjoyed it, though I suspect I'd appreciate it even more now. I also watched Gandhi last year, though that's from a somewhat later time, and I really enjoyed that one as well. I'm told that Lawrence of Arabia is one of the best which is why it's at the top of my list to see. That and the timing of the 50th Anniversary makes it seem serendipitous. Smile

I rewatched Jaws the other day after someone on here (I think drunken ) mentioned it- and it would never be made that way today- theres a huge pause in the middle where the characters just talk to each other! The entire first hour of the film is 90% character and setting based.
Same goes for other Speilberg films of the period actually- Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind spends as much time on the main characters domestic life as it does on UFO's. And is the much better film for having done so.
