Re: Tales of Home [3]
So not only is there no snow here, but now the road freezes with ice in the mornings and evenings. And yet, according to the weather report, there is no chance of snow at least in the next to weeks.
Maybe you should post another snow picture norc, some of us (me, that is) are having abstinences.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
wow..
"My first thoughts were "wow, he's getting pretty damn close here." But I've been up close before without incident. I hoped being still and passive would see him pass on. When he lowered his antlers to me, I wanted to keep my vitals protected and my head down. I felt that standing up would provoke him more and leave me more vulnerable to goring. I think that while protecting myself with my head down, having my head down was a signal that I was rutting with him. I was concerned at first, but when he started rearing back and lunging at me later on, I got scared and pissed off. That's when I wagged my finger at him to cut that shit out. I was relieved to see the Ranger coming.
So I guess at some point if the Ranger hadn't of pulled up, I would have had to disengage the best I could. I've joked with my friends that at least he took me for a buck and not a cow!"

I'm glad the norwegian elk isn't this "friendly".
We get one trotting through the garden every now and then.

I must be drunker than I thought as those two deer in the foreground collectively seem to have about 6 back legs between them!

Re: Tales of Home [3]
Wow.
We do get the occasional elg (elk) but we mostly see rådyr (roe deer?) down here. They go around in the gardens and eat nedfallsfrukt (fallen fruit) and other stuff. With the amount of fruit trees around here they must be very content (and fat) animals every autumn.
I do feel a bit for the foreigners though, they must think you live at the North Pole.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
I am sometimes intrigued by the view you all seem to have of Norway. Though on reflection a lot of it sounds like Svalbard, which is part of Norway I guess.
Tromsø is a lot more temperate, despite beeing north of the Artic Circle, because of the gulf stream. I think if you guys ever went there in the summer you might get a shock.
They do seem to get a shedload of snow though.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
{{{In my case, at least, I'm mostly just giving Norc a hard time. Although I was a little surprised just how temperate Tromso was when I was first learning about it. I didn't think the Gulf Stream extended that far north.}}}
Re: Tales of Home [3]
{{{Yeah, I kind of took that as a given. Just making the point though that this country is so varried it might even fit the preconsived notions above. Just maybe not in Tromsø.}}}

Roe deer are like deer just smaller and a lot less shy. While walking down the road you might have one casually saunter out of a garden and then casually walk away when it spots you.
I know. I know. Reindeer do seem to have certain connotations for people in the rest of the world though.Norc wrote:i do not live on the freaking north pole.. though.. almost.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
I think that as far as the rest of the world is concerned (excluding those that have actually looked in to it properly)... Norway is a frozen wasteland in the winter and all turns to deep, blue fjords flanked by green mountains in the summer.
Much like most people think Siberia is also a complete frozen wasteland or Africa is half desert half jungle.
Most countries have a lot of variety. Not sure why it surprises us to find out
