Relax, I think you'd be fine! Smart cars have two things going for them.Mrs Figg wrote:wow if trucks get blown over my little Smart car would end up in the drink saying hi to fish
1)they've got a low center of gravity like a toy punching clown, so they stand back up when you knock them over,
2) they're too short to blow over the rail.
(All the same I might think about calling in sick on really stormy days..... )

You know how most families have the uber-political/slightly-racist/very-opinionated/ultra-conservative member that has to be tolerated/endured?Mrs Figg wrote: I know the feeling, I would send pizza but it might be cold before it gets to you.
Now imagine if that was basically 95 percent of your family.
It wouldn't be wrong to say that I am the (silent) black-sheep of the family, on both my father and mother's sides.
For example: my father was criticizing Obama for seeking approval from congress to act on Syria. WTF? If he hadn't then my father would have criticized him anyway. I don't get it. I just learned to keep my mouth shut and leave the room quietly.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
I know the feeling Bungo- only in my case Im for independence for my country and my family are all unionists- that I dont mind, but their reasons are, well unreasonable and tied to a misplaced loyalty to Queen and Country that comes through the prism of several hundred years of anti-Catholicism and dedication to a football team.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
On my mother's side I have 5 aunts and one uncle. The aunts all married PhDs and are flat out liberals, the uncle was the youngest, stayed on the family farm and is a stalwart conservative. Family reunions can get interesting.
We all showed up for the wedding of the uncle's daughter. The preacher was uncle approved, and took it upon himself to give the happy couple a good 10 minutes of marital advice, which mainly consisted of the "obey" part of love, honor and obey. He felt it was going out of fashion so explained carefully with many helpful examples that the key to a happy marriage was for the wife to let the man lead in everything, and the man to be protective and never let her carry her luggage.
So for ten minutes my elderly honored aunts sat in stony silence with little fuming black clouds forming over them as the preacher extolled the virtues of a submissive wife. I snuck a glance back at a row of them during it, and all I can say is it was worth the price of a plane ticket just to see their expressions framed in their sunday finest. If it weren't for wedding propriety they would have taken him down within the first minute. Oh, it would have been a brawl.

Bungo I dont have much family left, but I remember biting my tongue when my grandmother used to talk about immigrants from ex British colonies, it used to get me riled up, so I would walk out, it saved me from exploding and it would have been a waste of time, its a generational thing, hopefully each younger generation gets more chilled out on these matters.

Halfy I have found the trick is to let Mr Figg think he leads in everything, and the luggage carrying is not optional.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
I had an interesting conversation with my semi (I won't go into it) girlfriend. I had mentioned offhand that we both knew she was really the one leading the relationship. She frantically tried to convince me that wasn't true at all. I think she was afraid she'd lose control if I ever realized I wasn't the one in charge.

Re: Tales of Home [3]
It's reassuring to hear others experience with this issue. I know it has been difficult for me to watch my parents succumb to the "culture of fear" that's being propagated by fox news and conservative talk radio. My father has owned a hunting rifle for as long as I can remember, but in the last four years he has acquired at least three non-hunting firearms (and has become a member of the National Rifle Association), and my mother now owns a pistol. And it's not like they live in a high violent crime area; they live in rural Minnesota. I don't have a problem with people owning guns, but I feel that they have purchased them for the wrong reason (i.e. Obama's gonna take our guns away!). And it's really weird to think the house I grew up in now has all these guns in it.
I swear, my father said the most ridiculous thing to me a few months ago. He said that Muslims were trying to take over the United States.

We should tell those Muslims to take a number. Don't they know there are at least a dozen minorities in line ahead of them ahead of them?bungobaggins wrote:

Re: Tales of Home [3]
maybe its harder for people who dont live in very big cities to feel at ease with ethnic minorities, if you live in New York and London you just see people as people, you are obliged to get on with people of all colours and creeds, its normal for every second person to speak a foreign language. In the country foreigners stick out and you notice their differences more, and you will get to know less of them. Plus in times of financial trouble or imminent war old fears always come to the surface, 300 years ago it was witches now its foreign people.
