No, you cant use grass. But you can use just a large green cloth, so long as it fills the area behind he person in the frame.
And it needs to be stretched very tight so it doesnt have any wrinkles or folds in (you might have to get the iron out Mrs Figg), and then you need to make sure its in a good strong light thats uniform across it, so there are no bright or shadowy spots.
Then I just tell the program to replace everything green with whatever imagery I want for the background (so its a good idea not to wear green or you will go transparent, could be very embarrassing if its a green bustle)

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
So in the hopes of steering this thread back towards film discussion, I saw The Wind That Shakes the Barley tonight after all the trick-or-treaters had left. It was a really good movie, but holy hell was it a downer. Also, I had trouble understanding a lot of the accents, but I had some help from my step-mom who was watching, since her grandfather was Irish.
For those who don't know, the film is about the Irish War of Independence and the ensuing Civil War, as seen through the eyes of two brothers who are fighting for Irish independence. It's quite a violent and disturbing movie, but never in an exploitative way. It won the Palme d'Or (top prize) at Cannes and while I can't say if that was deserved or not, I think it's a very good film. It also reinforced my love for Cillian Murphy.
I'd post the trailer, but it spoils a lot of moments in the film so I'll just stick with the poster.
Anyone else seen this?

haen't seen it, but it sounds good and i love irish accents so i might give it a go when did it come out? is it a new movie or will i find it in the DVD-shelves?
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
It came out in 2006 so you should be able to find it as a DVD, assuming you still have places that sell or rent DVDs in Norway. I watched it on Netflix but I don't know how many countries its available in streaming.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I was impressed with that movie too. What made it stand out for me was that it tells a story much bigger than the Irish revolution and civil war.
It's telling how people get sucked into causes they may not have chosen to support, how their morals and values evolve, and the consequences of War on families. It's as relevant in Syria or Afghanistan today as to the American Revolution a couple centuries ago.
It made me stop and think.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
It's called B flat, not B minor. 'H' is used in Germany as well. But the actual key is g minor, the relative minor to B flat major. Though the melody is rather androgynous with respect to minor/major the G in the Bass gives it away as most definitely g minor.Norc wrote:this might be at help it has the notes at least

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
In fact (excuse me as I put on my musical theorist hat...there, that's right) the sense of uneasiness that pervades the music comes from two related sources:
1. The continual failure to resolve the suspended fourths
2. The lack of the minor 3rd of the tonic throughout the music due to #1. Without the defining minor 3rd the ear has difficulty deciding if the music is major or minor, creating aural anxiety.
Very interesting technique.
Don't you just love it when I obviously have better things I should be doing?

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
Yeah, I agree that the movie was resonant way beyond its subject matter. I felt that it was a relatively evenhanded depiction of revolution and civil war and the effect that has on people and society (especially the parts that often get skipped over in history books), despite the filmmakers' very clear sympathies for the anti-Treaty IRA.David H wrote:I was impressed with that movie too. Ken Loach films are always superb. Even when you dont personally enjoy them you can still see the point of them. Kind of te opposite of PJ as directors go.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I'd also recommend Kes from 1969, one of Loache's first films, I was going to put up the trailer but even by the standards of the time its a bad trailer more likely to put you off.
I also recommend Land of Freedom-
And My Name is Joe -
Or try Carla's Song-
Or you could start with the tv drama that made his name and actually changed government policy and public attitudes, Cathy Come Home from 1966, a very important bit of drama and rare in terms of it having a real effect in the real world- this was one of the first dramas I can clearly remember watching with my mother as a kid (must have been a repeat as I wasnt born when it was originally shown) and its one of the main reasons I write now. To have that power of effect, even if its just to make someone smile as they read. Not that this will make you smile much but it might move you.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I first heard about Sexy Beast on here when Chris posted the opening credits song in the old movie music thread. I finally got around to watching it tonight as I've started working through my Netflix backlog and I really enjoyed it. Ben Kingsley was great of course but Ray Winstone and Ian McShane left just as much of an impression on me.
