If only I could find a way to make the effect last longer than 10 seconds- which is precisely the amount of time it takes people to be reminded again why they were so annoyed with me in the first place!

Who would seem more suited to the comic universe than Sherlock. But as I dont want to start any sort of precedent for Who and Marvel joining up on the big screen I will vote for Sherlock

I watched Ender's Game last night. It was okay, not great. Made me mildly interested in checking out the books. Overall the acting (from the young actors and old) was not good.
Harrison Ford is going to be awful as an elderly Han Solo.

Harrison Ford doesn't seem to give a shit anymore. Even when he's decent (like in last year's 42) he still comes across as phoning it in.
It's cool to imagine that he'll get a role like Samuel L. Jackson's in Django Unchained where he shows that he still knows how to turn in a hell of a performance, but I don't think Star Wars Episode VII is going to provide that role. Ford has made his distaste for Star Wars plenty clear over the years.

The actor. It was obvious that he just didn't want to be there, and it's like he felt obligated to do this for money or something (which shouldn't be a problem for him should it??).
Sure he's supposed to play a hard-ass emotionless military commander, but it was pretty clear that he didn't care.

I don't think he'll be getting a role like that ever again. Star Wars VII will be embarrassing on so many levels.

That sucks. Hopefully that's just how he comes across on screen and his life is doing okay. He doesn't seem to enjoy being remembered as Han Solo and Indiana Jones, but those roles mean a lot to me and I do think he was a genuine great actor (in other movies too, including Blade Runner).

Yeah, Episode VII will most likely be a clusterfuck, though I doubt Harrison Ford is going to be even close to the worst thing about it.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
That's too bad, because those roles are important to me too (and millions of others). It's too bad that he can't take pride in that. Not many people get the chance to make that kind of an impact.

Months ago The Straight Story was recommended here by Petty and Dave. It finally came up on my queue.
Watching it now. What an absolute delight. Lynch takes his time and does it right: I don't think there's any way to improve on what I've seen so far, not by trimming a second or choosing another take of any scene. Definitely worth getting.

Okay, the deer scene was sub-par and should have been deleted. But the rest was as sweet and lyrical a piece of work as I've ever seen.

This is why I think Lynch could have been an amazing choice for Tolkien Halfy.
People tend to only think of his more extreme examples- Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mullholland Drive (all are brilliant by the way, just very Lynch) but he can do straightforward too, and to that type of tale he brings his ability to generate atmosphere out of seemingly empty space.
Here's a good example from Mulholland Drive, a simple conversation in a dinner becomes all sorts of uncomfortable offness with nothing more than words, simple music cues and Lynch's direction.
And one of my favourite scenes from Twin Peaks, another dinner scene oddly enough, the Majors dream-

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I agree that he definitely has the capability, and the Straight Story shows he can restrain his odder tendencies, but let's look at Dune, which is the closest he's come to LotR.
Much of Dune was indeed perfection, but he went off the rails in some key aspects: the use of the Voice as a weapon of war for the Fremen; Paul making it rain at the end. Both diametrically opposed to Herbert's vision, demonstrating he has some of the same alarming characteristics of PJ towards reinterpretation. If he could keep it in check I agree he would have been a great director for LotR. But what happened with Dune scared me.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I'm not sure Dune is a good example.
Lynch was so disillusioned and angry at the studio over the changes they made to that film, and the reediting of it that he swore he would never work directly for a major studio again, and never has.
Its almost impossible to judge from the finished product what was Lynch and what was the studio (my gut says all the good stuff is Lynch and the rest the studio!) as he also refuses to even talk about it these days.
So I reckon your not the only one the Dune film scared, it scared Lynch away too!

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
The changes I alluded to could not have been done by editing: they were filmed, hence were Lynch's intention. The studio changes were mainly re-editing of the filmed bits, not new filming.
edit: and I hated what he did with the Harkonnens. This was NOT Herbert.

I'm glad you liked The Straight Story, Halfy.
I'd almost forgotten the roadkill scene till you mentioned it though. I'm curious what troubles you about it so much.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
1. overacting by the woman in the car. The rest of the movie is laconic. Sticks out, ruins the atmosphere.
2. How does an old man who can barely walk without two canes slaughter a deer? I'm implicitly assuming he dragged the carcass off the road, but I may be wrong here.
3. Was the final scene a bunch of deer decoys looking at him, or was it supposed to be a bunch of real deer? From the way he was acting it was supposed to be real dear, but it was obviously a bunch of decoys. They would have done better to do some green screen splicing with a pack of live deer. It just looked comically fake, and not in a good way.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
Those sound like fair criticisms. That's probably why the scene faded in my memory.
Though regarding #2, if I were a stove-up old man with a sharp knife I'd probably just take the haunches of the carcass where it lay. I'll have to look at that....
Damn! now I guess I gotta watch the movie tonight! I knew I should stay away for here till I got caught up!
