I would add however that I think you underestimate the fact all those films were, by and large, huge steaming piles of cinematic poo.
Also when a big film like LotR's comes along, takes a gamble and makes a mint everyone as you say rushes to find something to cash in- but they have to get it to market quickly enough that the audience hasn't moved onto something else by the time it comes out- so even if they throw money at it the first thing to go under the pressure is nearly always the artistic integrity of the original piece.
That's an important point that you're right we shouldn't forget. Laughing The fantasy movie genre has churned out a lot of terrible slock and I'm sure that's contributed to those movies failing to gain a foothold. I do think the freshness factor is important, though. I haven't seen many of them, but I don't think that all of the Twilight imitators are as bad as Twilight. Some are probably better. But when a movie is obviously derivative there's not much of a reason for the average moviegoer to go watch it. Part of this I'm sure is because studios and filmmakers go out of their way to bend the source material to make it as similar as possible to other popular series, but even if the final product is decent it will struggle more to find a foothold. In my sort-of informed opinion, anyway. Razz

Watched Oblivion, a bit slow, but not bad

Enjoyed the extras you get on the disc.

The first Iron Man is great. Iron Man 2 is ass. Iron Man 3 is somewhere in between but pretty entertaining. You should watch The Avengers between IM2 and 3, though.

I really dug Avengers too. Thumbs Up I still need to watch all of the Marvel movies that are part of their growing "cinematic universe" though.

I enjoyed the start of Captain America- but after that it got increasingly stupid until the bit where he flies a 1940's era plane from Europe to America in about 2 minutes flat Evil or Very Mad Did nobody making that film own an atlas or ever use google earth?

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the movie "The Room", one of the best worst movies ever made. If you've already seen it, re-watch it! Thumbs Up

And if you haven't seen it yet, here's a little taste. Wink

Watched John Carpenters They Live! for the first time in many years- still the best film ever made with a wrestler in the lead role. Very Happy
The opening is slower paced than I remember but thats something I liked, it builds well, has a great premise very well executed, everyones good in it, even Roddy Roddy Piper (incidentally why is he associated with Scotland? He seems about as Scottish as Eldo! It cant just be cause his second name is Piper can it?), it has a hysterically funny never ending fight scene and of course it has a superb bass heavy as always Carpenter soundtrack.

Ideally watch knowing nothing much about it- but if you need convinced heres 10 minutes of spoilery Carpenter genius-

You were the least Scottish person I could think of offhand- the aussies are almost certainly part Scot, Halfy looks like a polite haggis and David owns a farm (ok I admit I dont know why that makes him possibly more Scottish either, it just does ok! drunken )

The original I hope and not the remake.
Superb physical effects in that film- even still- we abandoned this art form too soon in favour of cgi in my opinion-

Dont watch those if you havent seen the original- just go watch the full thing instead. Nod

Half of Django Unchained is awesome, the other is overlong self indulgent but interesting filler. Typical Tarantino, fun but flawed 7/10

Hard to disagree with you there, though as a bit of a Tarantino fanboy I'd give Django more than a 7/10. It's definitely in the lower half of Tarantino films in my ranking, though.
