Petty had no choice but to come back with such blasphemy- Eldo

Glad to see Eldo you recognise it for what it is! Blasphemy indeed!

"that was my cunning plan."

Wimmin! Mad  {{{{ Kissing }}}}

Although one thing I forgot to mention about Pandorica that should be mentioned- its a huge amount of fun- with the Doctor zapping about with the mop and fez, or then mention of alternative universe Richard Dawkins being head of the star cult, or Amy revealing she studied the Romans for her school project entitled 'Invasion of the Hot Italians' and that she got marked down for the title.
Its full of great lines too from the big stuff like the Doctor beside Amelias bed telling her the story of how he stole the TARDIS to the one liners that dot the episodes.

Besides you also get this great fan song out of it-

And just because I love Matt in this scene so much -

I think with River there is no doubt its complicated which not only means the viewer has to put a lot of pieces together every time they see her but it can also make her seem oddly distant, or oddly emotional, or inconsistent from the viewers perspective.

To try to give some examples when Amy and the viewer first see adult River in series 5 it is in the Angels two parter.

Bit of a Who row broke out over the 50th Anniversary trailer shown at Comic con.

The rumour mill suggested it would be available in the US.
This has upset UK fans who were getting the feeling the US audience gets more of this sort of stuff than the UK one does- similar to how several of the 'prequels' to episodes last series were only available to subscribers of US netflixs and Itunes and not in the UK.

In response the BBC have released this rather short and blunt statement-

'This was an exclusive Comic Con trailer made especially for the Doctor Who 50th panel, it has not been released in the US.
This world famous international event is an established platform used by all of the major producers. UK fans can look forward to exclusive content over the next few months.'

Matt who was on a US talk show last night apologized to fans who didnt get to see it.

been rewatching all the episodes from series 5-7. Recently Watched Impossible Astronaut and the Day of the Moon, I really didnt like them much. Then I missed out the pirate one cos its silly, then I watched Rebel Flesh and the Almost People which I thought brain numbingly tedious, I could hardly watch it it bored me rigid. but The Doctors Wife is excellet, really enjoyed everything about it, great performances and lots of heart and interesting story. Nice.

I like the premise of the Flesh episodes- they have a very old fashioned Who feel to them, very classic Who- but some of the execution is not so good.

I do hope you are watching in order though as series 6 cant really be seen any other way.

Couple of vids for you-

This a scene from the 7th Doctor (McCoy) story Ghostlight (one of my favourites of his period, but damn weird!)- the moment Ace (7th Companion) realises the Doctor has tricked and manipulated her (spoilery if you want to watch the full story- and I do recommend it- you will find it on dailymotion)
When he got a grip on the character in his second series McCoy made an excellent Doctor.

And a fan music vid thing about Nuwho Companions (some spoilers)

Seems like the 50th episode will break another broadcasting record-

'The 50th-anniversary episode of Doctor Who is to be broadcast around the world at the same time, it has been revealed.
It is believed the deal has been struck with global networks to prevent any spoilers and plot leaks, and is set to make it the world's biggest drama simulcast.'- Gallifrey Base

Doctor Who [6] - Page 9 Empty Re: Doctor Who [6]

Post by Mrs Figg Tue Jul 30, 2013 10:44 am

so I finished series 6, and I have to say its my least favourite series. Its very messy, a mixed bag of some good episodes and some really dull confusing ones. I only really liked 3, and I have to say those 3 episodes have completely changed my mind about Smiths Doctor. I like him. In the Doctors Wife, The Lodger and Closing Time, he gives some excellent performances with an empthasis on his character rather than timey wimey up its own butt nonsense.  All the River stuff I cant abide, it fills the episodes with so much over complicated torturous plot shenanigans it means the Doctor and Amy look like puppets dancing to Moffats tune, I prefer the more introspective Doctor, The Lodger and specially The Doctors Wife, gives us time to actually get to know him a bit, and I like that. I also thought there was far too much horror, its scary enough for adults but for kids its far too much. I know Who is all about scary monsters, the Daleks are my first memory of hiding behind the sofa, but series 6 went over the line into supernatural horror film territory, Who is not about that stuff in my opinion. I would have liked Angels in NY but the angels were a bit overused they dont have the same impact as Blink and it was a mistake to keep dragging them out.

Post by Pettytyrant101 Tue Jul 30, 2013 3:26 pm

I am so glad you have warmed to Matt's performance.
Rivers story being too timey wimey is a matter of taste I suppose- I didnt find it so and I enjoyed immensely being left to piece it together rather than having everything spelled out. And in a show whose main character is a Time Traveler I think its fair ground to explore, and surprisingly ground the show has rarely dealt with before directly so was fresh to0- finding something entirely new after 50 years cant be easy.

As to too scary- I am not quite sure what you mean in terms of 'supernatural horror' - as I cant think of any episodes which have a supernatural theme to them at all.
Whether its too scary I dont know, not being a kid anymore- I dont think so- I dont think there is anything in Nu Who to compare with some of the horror elements prevalent in the show in the 70's in stuff like the Horror of Fang Rock or Talons- or the amount of onscreen blood in the 80's.

Doctor Who [6] - Page 9 DA_Master_close_up_zps95329c7a - from Classic Who, this scared the living crap out of me as a kid! Sofa

The kids in my family and friends kids who watch do watch with heads buried in pillows, parents or whatever they can find- but they come back next week to do it all again, just like I did.

I am surprised you dont mention the Girl Who Waited - and not just because I think Karen puts in a very strong performance but more for the Rory/Doctor releationship.
This episode for me is Rory's episode more than anything else- and I thought the way it was written- Rory raging at the Doctor for how he travels and putting them all danger recklessly, and the final moments where the Doctor puts Rory in his shoes to make the hard decisions was superbly played out.
You know a script has you by the goolies when you shout something at the screen the character then says- and thats what I was like thinking 'thats unfair Doctor' a split second before Rory says "This is unfair. You are trying to turn me into you."
I found that such a painful scene and demonstrated just how 'alien' and nonhuman the Doctor can be at times, and how he is capable of great compassion and great coldness at need.
And it puts Rory in a position of perhaps seeing the Doctor for what he really is much more than almost any other companion has. There is an understanding between them from that point on that changes their dynamic.

The angels have only appeared in 3 stories since their creation in Blink- I dont think they should crop up many more times myself but I dont think 3 times in 5 series is overkill. Daleks and Cybermen have made more appearances than that in the same time frame.

But at least overall you have warmed to Matt's Doctor.

As far as horror goes I was thinking of the episode in the spooky orphanage with the writing on the wall and the horrible custodian, it felt like a second rate horror film rather than Who, but that is my instinctual opinion on it, and you cant really correct my view on that.
As to The Girl who waited, I loathe and hate that episode, everything about it sets my teeth on edge. Its just nasty stuff, I dont want to get into an argument about it, as its old ground I have no wish to retread.
But yeah he is growing on me, and I actually dont mind Amy so much either. I pity her character a lot, the Writers seem to love to really tortures her in almost every episode. My opinion again natch.

Well I wouldn't agree about second rate myself but it is horror- but Who has always borrowed from classic horror film set ups- whether its a spooky big house or some alien parasite eating your brains- there are vampires in Curse of Fenric for examples that are very classic horror-

So quite the contrary I would say its very much in Who's tradition of horror. The most blatant probably being Blink- which is basically a horror film for kids.

Regards Amy I do think she gets put through a hell of lot explaining the Doctors sense of guilt regarding her-
Spoiler:

.Rory has got a fair complaint there, and the rare opportunity to live long enough to state it!- David

Agreed on both points! But few companions understand the Doctor so well as Rory does in that moment and there's is much more a releationship of equals following that episode.

Meant to ask Figg what did you think about the God Complex? An episode I like more and more ever time I watch with surprising depth to it.
Its a good Smith episode too,

Thisis a vid about the Doctors self loathing really, and why.

But I'm putting it up in particular because it has an excellent demonstration of why I think that scene in The Girl Who Waited between Rory and the Doctor and the 'decision' is so important, and does so in visuals in a way better than words - its at- 2 minutes 2 seconds. Huge spoilers!
I hope in particular you watch it Mrs Figg as it may alter your view of what he does although it in no way diminishes the harshness of it.
