wow you lucky thing Norc, we used to have BBC Entertainment or Prime but Sky stopped showing it. damn. I do sometimes get an episode in Italian on one of the more obscure channels but they are never in order, and obviously dubbed. thats why its great to have the links.

Obviously this isnt good.
So I propose each week we watch 2 classic episodes (roughly same length as 1 modern episode) that I will put up every Saturday night- with episodes from each Doctor to celebrate the 50th.
Anyone up for that?
Great Idea ! I feel bereaved at mo, Naff all till November ??!!!!!!!!!! I think not ! Theres hardly anything on TV that interests me as it is, & when I do find something its whipped off before you can say......Tardis !

In this case it was everything after (and including -- should have mentioned that before) the question mark. Basically you want nothing but the default URL, with no extraneous coding shit at the end. Same as when posting embedded YouTube videos.

It's BBC entertainment Nordic (I assume) and that's where I started watching Dr Who. The odd episode now and then, then they finally started over from ep1 s1 and I manage to catch most of them. For some odd reason they never sent any of the Chirstmas specials though, I have no idea why.
They also send a lot re-runs of 'Live at the Apollo' and 'QI' with Stephen Fry which is nice. And reruns of Graham Norton (well that guy you know). And a lot of stuff I don't bother to look at.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
We saw the two eps yesterday. The pace is funny compared to today's tv, we keep waiting for things to start and then the episode ends. And the vikings! The kings helmet must be very useful if they do a lot of climbing like that, a bit like the old hat-on-a-stick trick from westerns. If anyone shoots an arrow or throws an axe a the top, it's still half a meter from doing any damage to the man wearing it.
And the names. Pure stereotypic vikings.
I did have a laugh or two at the jokes in the dialogue, it's not bad.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
The space cow line aways gets me- and the panda one.
Although it might not seem it now the vikng stuff was part of the historical eductional remit of the original programme and was based on the best information available at the time, thinking on the vikings has changed a fair bit however since the early 1960's (the helmet is in fact a copy of a real one from a museum that was discovered buried in an english field- I am less sure about the authenticity of the viking names, you would be far better placed than me to judge those)

Re: Doctor Who [5]
What Amarie and I have been talking about last few posts Norc! - I put up two episodes of classic Who- the Time Meddler- which is a story with vikings in it.
The plan is to put up the equivelent in length of a modern episode every Saturday until Novemebr- with episodes from all Doctors.

The names were quite accurate, but I am a bit unsure about Sven.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
sounds like proper viking names.. well... now. people were called Brynjulf and Hariabaldur and Thor and so on...
Re: Doctor Who [5]
My thoughts on the Time Meddler- first two episodes.
- Spoiler:
- To pick up on what Amarie was saying about the pace, I am sure there is a perfect golden zone somewhere between original Who's novel like unfolding pace and todays breakneck format.
Its quite different in form too from a modern new companion first adventure story like End of the World, The Shakespeare Code, Fires of Pompeii, Beast Below and Rings of Akhenten. With less emphasis given to it as a companion story in general and more a story that happens to have a new companion in it. Which I rather like.
I find it almost impossible to dislike anything about Hartnells portrayal even when he fluffs his lines (like the climbing the cliffs one) it just makes him seem more endearing and real. And his occasional delighted squeals never fail to raise a joyous smile on my face. In the same way Smith's Doctor sometimes looks old beyond his years Hartnells old Doctor can seem childlike in his delight at finding out new stuff, like a kid on xmas morning.
The bad guy of the piece- the Time Meddler himself is nicely underplayed in these opening episodes- to the point you only really know he is the main bad guy by a process of elimination.
I also like the attempts at historical accuracy as it was undertood in the 60's, and if you are going to do an historic viking event on a budget then the events immediately preceding and leading into 1066 arent a bad place to go, interesting in their own right as they are a less told story, and a hell of a lot cheaper than doing the big battles.
I still find the 'rape' scene disturbing even though it happens offscreen and is never mentioned as such, the actress who plays the part does an exellent job of giving the impression of something horrible having happened without doing anything other than a catatonic like blank stare, which I find much more effective and distrubing than a lot of sobbing would have been.
It also deals with it well- the most a kid would get from those scenes is the vikings werent very nice to her, but for adults watching its quite clear what happened to her, espeially with the line "It was those travellers, but I didnt think even they were capable of this" ending the scene on the fade out.
Even now even aluding to rape in this way still suprises me in Who, and I find it hard to conceive of NuWho ever going there. The closest modern comparison I can think of is Solomons words to Nefrettiti about 'breaking her in'- but even that is an allusion to a rape to come that never occurs, as opposed to the aftermath of one having already occured.
The cliff hanger on the second episode is interesting too, as its not very traditional Nu or classic Who- as its just a mystery of where has the Doctor gone rather than anyone in any direct peril.
Personally I thought the reveal that a monk in the 11th Century had a gramaphone playing music was the bigger cliffhanger moment.

I think thats why I love Who so much, it the only show I watch that really makes me feel young, and excitable again.
It can be dark, and it can be scary, but its not cynical, its not nasty and its always got hope.
