Re: Doctor Who [5]
so avoiding problems ?- Norc
I think it has to be in the thinking. It would change certain episodes- most ones set in the past on earth would inevitably bump up against raceism or sexism or they wouldnt seem like credible historic settings.
What if it was a black Doctor who walked into an old west town? Or a black Doctor in Victorian Yorkshire, or a female Doctor in Victorian times- he or she immediately run into problems.
It gets worse in Angels Take Manhattan- there you'd have a black Doctor in America in the 40's.
It changes the nature of the thing if the Doctor cant just waltz in, do his thing and get on with the adventure- if he/she has to deal every time with racism, or if she has to deal with no one taking her seriously becuase she is just a woman, it alters things.

If it aint broken why fix it. But this need to have women or Black people or Asians or whatever really gets on my wick because you know why they have done it. Its not the best man for the job its beacuse of some trendy yogurt knitting latte swilling pc do-gooder who gets a nervous twitch every time he gets a letter complaining that the Doctor isnt a hairy legged dungaree wearing Black feminist transexual with piles and one leg.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
There is I think another good reason for the Doctor being a man. He is an excellent, and rare in the modern world, roll model for young boys. A man who solves problems with his brain and does all he can to avoid the use of violence rather than just pulling a gun and shooting everything.

Given that Time Lords can change sex when regenerating its outrageous that it hasn't happened yet- CC
Actually Tom Baker is too blame for this, especially the press always speculating about a female Doctor.
When Baker quit he said at his press conference at the end, "good luck who ever gets the role, whoever he or she might be"
Every since then specualtion has rained.
Regeneration has been shown to work differently for different Time-Lords- when Rommana, a Time-Lady as opposed to Time-Lord regenerated she could choose her appearence and went through several choices, including other species, before settling on a look.
The Doctors regenerations on the other hand have always been traumatic, forced events and he never seems to have any choice- he cant even make himself ginger like he wants.
In show the only evidence we really have is from the Doctors Wife when the Doctor reminices about the Corsair and how every regeneration they got the same tattoo, whether they were male or female.
Time Lords are also sterile, due to an ancient curse by the last of the ruling Pyrthian priestesses, and their young are woven on genetic looms.
So they have no longer a biological need for male and female, further complicating matters.
We do have onscreen evidence for skin colour change however

i see why you think it might be a problem, but i can only see that it would be something new and fun to exlpore. a female doctor would be awesome, we'll see I hope he turns out ginger soon though.

Yes, obviously, but I was just giving them as examples of circumstances in which racism or sexism would have altered or interferred witt the story- meaning any future episodes in similar time periods risk turning Who into a repetive Doctor has to overcome skeptical racist/chuavanist every time before the adventure bit can properly get going.
Basically when the Doctor is white and male you dont have these extra issues to have to deal with in the writing.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
If the race and gender issues get old, the writers could choose to dismiss them just like the language and class issues have been in the past. Done with wit it could be quite entertaining. I'm thinking of scenes like Donna trying to speak Latin to Romans.
