Re: Doctor Who [5]
Its just so unlike them! I mean usually the polling is pretty good- most episodes end up between 7-9- but the actual posts are usually more in line with Mrs Figgs, but on a really, really angry day.
So far the vast majority are along the lines of-
'Brilliant. One of the best episodes of new who.'
'Astonishing.'
'wow wow wow that was brilliant, absolutely blimmin love that'
'Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. The best finale ever and possible the best episode since Doctor Who came back.'
'A true 10/10 classic '
And that just really isnt like Gallifrey Base- Im sure the hate Moffat/Smith crew will rally at some point however.

The vast majoity just rate the episode- as I said the actual scores are always pretty good to excellent, but the haters are by far the most common poster, even though they are in the minority.
Yes its a Moffat penned episode.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
The Name of the Doctor. Do not be tempted to read this before seeing the episode please. It really is one of those episodes you should watch knowing as little as possible.
- Spoiler:
- We all know not to trust Moffat by now, and especialy not about titles.
But it turns out we shouldnt even trust him when he tells us we are getting a season finale- that was not actually what he delivered.
What he actually gave us was a 45 minute prequel to the 50th Anniversary episode.
"What sort of idiot would try to steal a broken TARDIS?"
And in case there were any possibilities you might think otherwise the episode openes in a monitoring room where an alarm is alerting to someone stealing a Tardis.
Yup, we begin in Gallifrey, long, long ago with the 1st Doctor stealing the TARDIS- and meeting Clara.
And he is not the only one, she folows 4 and 6 through the corridors of a ship, sees 5 and 7 in peril and 2 runs past her, as does 9 and 10.
In the space of the episodes precredits we are treated to the ghosts of Doctors past.
The plot itself concerns Madame Vastra, Jennie and Strax following up on a clue from a demented prisoner- That the Doctor would take his greatest secret to his grave....and it has been found.
So they have a conference call across Time, inviting Clara and River Song (or at least the post death copy version in the library database who is invisible to anyone not part of the link)- but as they decide what to do and discover the coordinates of Trenzalore- where River says the Doctor must never go- the Great Intelligence hench men- the Whispermen, blank of face, big of mouth and with a creepy line in rymning couplets, take them captive.
All save Clara who comes too back in her own home, where the Doctor has arrived to met her. (Must be a wednesday!)
What follows is my favourite bit of Matt Smith performance ever as Clara tells him that the GI has taken his friends to Trenzalore- the Doctor breaks down.
Its so suprising and so shocking, and so well played by Matt that its a very moving moment.
Pressed by Clara he reveals that they werent listening- its not the his greatest secret thats on Trenzalore- its the one place a time traveler must never go, cant go, his own grave, Trenzalore its where the Doctor is buried.
Unwilling to let his friends perish however he decides to go anyway, but the TARDIS is a lot less keen as its the ultimate in paradoxes and crossing your own time stream.
Eventually after much coaxing they make it to the war torn Trenzalore
- sight of the Doctors last battle and covered in the graves of war dead, and his tomb.
And its some tomb- buried in his dying TARDIS, whose dimensional stablisers are breaking down as she dies, making the TARDIS tomb bigger on the outside.
"What else would they bury me in?"
So with a bit of being chased by Whispermen, and Clara discovering she can still see and hear River, even though no one else can, they find their way to the entrance of the tomb.
Where the GI and Whispermen await with Jenna, Strax and Madame Vestra, who the GI is soon putting to their deaths if the Doctor will not say the words to open his tomb- his name.
But he refuses, but the tomb opens anyway. River said his name, though we dont hear what it is (and we have known from the very begining River knew his name) and they enter the Doctors tomb.
It turns out not to contain anything as mundane as a body, but the wound in reality created by the Doctor in his passage through his life, from Gallifrey to Trenzalore. His time line, his life.
A seething mass of twisitng energy, his entire lifespan, all his days, good and bad.
And like any wound it can be infected. Which is exactly what the GI does, stepping in to the energy field and being blasted into fragments, scattered throughout the Doctors timeline, turning all the Doctors victories into defeats. Every triumph into sorrrow.
And in doing so the Doctor is rendered helpless in agony as outside whole constellation go out that once had been saved by the Doctor.
And thats when Claara realises, she has been getting flashes about memories she had forgotten, generated by the dying TARDIS telepahtic circuits (good old girl, still helping to save her Doctor even as she dies watching over his remains). Clara sees how she is sofflle girl, and Victorian girl and many, many thouasnds more.
Telling the Doctor to run, then pausing before saying the words that will echo through his life- 'run, run you clever boy and remember me.'
She steps into the stream and scatters herself through the Doctors timline, defeating the GI at every turn and restoring it.
Restoring all except herself.
"The soufflé isn’t the soufflé, the soufflé is the recipe."
So the Doctor does the one thing he should never do, he steps into his own timeline to and find Clara.
But not before a moving speech by River about why he shouldnt and about saying goodbye, and the revelation the Doctor has been able to see and hear her all the time, but never spoke to her because he thought it would be too painful for him, and it is.
"He left me like a book on a shelf. Never even said goodbye. He doesn’t like endings."
He steps into his own timestream causing the time lines to start to collapse and when he does find Clara she has found the Doctors real secret.
As the Doctor explains to her, his real name is not important, but the name he choose is. Its more than a name, Doctor, its an ideal to live up to, a promise between himself and the name.
And the secret Clara has found is the regeneration of the Doctor that broke the deal, the regeneration not counted in the list of Doctors.
"I said he was me I never said he was The Doctor.
He is the one who broke that promise."
"What I did, I did without choice. In the name of peace and sanity."
The mystery incarnation says as he Doctor leads Clara out and to safety as the mystery version turns around to the accompanying words oncreen- 'Introducing John Hurt as the Doctor.'
Despite the high thematic concepts about the Doctors secrets, his affect on the universe and tying up Clara's story so it now makes sense, what this episode actually does best is all the little stuff- the Doctor breaking down at the start, the genuine affection between Jenny and Vastra. Clara coming to understand her role and what it means to be the impossible girl born to save the Doctor. And River and the Doctor perhaps finally gaining some sort of closure on her life.
The story is impossibly epic in concept and touches on the shows entire 50 year run, that perhaps makes it one more for the fan boys. It certainly made this fan boy pleased. And it beautifully tees up the Anniversary episode too.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
What its clear as day Mrs Figg!
edit add-
- Spoiler:
- Is who dead? The Doctor? If so no he is in his own timeline presumably he has a means to get back out as he seems to be planning to leave with Clara when the other Doctor turns up.
Who is Clara- Clara is a perfectly ordinary girl born in the present time, who sacrifices herself by entering the Doctors timeline and being scattered throughout it as echoes of herself and in the course of being throughout his time lone she becomes the 'perfect companion'.
The Doctor is dead- some time in the future- Trenzelore is where he is buried.
Without seeing the 50th cant yet be 100% certain on Hurt- Hurt is according to the Doctor the regeneration that broke the promise of being the Doctor- who didnt live up to/deserve the name- the Doctors dark secret- from Hurts words "What I did I did without choice. For peace and sanity" would hint towards him being the one who ended the time war by committing mass genocide.
edit add-
- Spoiler:
- Hurt might also be the regen known in myth as The Valeyard (mentioned by Simeon in the episode- the first mention of it in NUwho). The Valeyard is a complicated concept so I doubt Hurt is that, but you never know with Moffat!

- ok I saw it on that Tubeplus website thingie. well its a very good episode but not my favourite. I like the glimpses of the past Doctors and the explaination of who and what Clara is (which is nice) and i guess it sets up the 50th anniversary brilliantly what with the Doctors etc so overall I liked it, oh there were some excellent visuals like the TARDIS on the horrible planet and Victorian London is always a treat. so yeah, very good and interesting, but nowhere near my fav Tennant episodes

Well at least you liked it Mrs Figg! It must have been doing something right. Although I think it would have had a greater impact had you been spoiler free going into it with no idea of what to expect.
Out of curiousty what are your favourtie Tennant episodes Mrs Figg?- Midnight- Family of Blood- Girl in the Fireplace- Empty Child/Doctor Dances, Waters of Mars would make my top Tennant list.
