Very true CC. star trek thread - Page 4 1918643206

And Mrs Figg thats fine- and there are a million films out there to get that from- but ST was a show founded on the idea that the imagined science would be as closely as possible based upon the current science.
NASA were the shows advisers on science. The first shuttlecraft was named Enterprise because of St.
So many scientists, physcists, astronauts, engineers were inspired watching ST- because they could go find out more about imaginary warp drive and then discover the real scence it was based on.
I for one think its a loss to replace that with just entertainment and nothing more.

I'm not used to you making jokes at me Eldo! Shocked (and still no excuse for not watching the purist edits!)

I hate to be the one who has to tell you this, but the theory of relativity dictates that warp drives are impossible. Crying or Very sad

Actually Eldo warp speed does not contravene the theory of relativity- the space within the warp bubble where the ship is never exceeds light space. The warp drive bends space around a static warp shell which is how it moves.

'A theoretical solution for faster-than-light travel which models the warp drive concept, was formulated by physicist Alcubrrue in 1994. Subsequent calculations found that such a model would require negative mass,
the existence of which has never been supported by any evidence, and prohibitive amounts of energy. However, it has recently been found that by changing the shape of the warp drive, much less negative mass and energy could be used, though the energy required is still many orders of magnitude greater than anything currently possible by human beings. NASA scientists have begun preliminary research on such technology.'

And you wont get a conversation out of new ST like this!

Or you could admit ST tech is at least advised by real science and scientsts and that they actively saught to educate and promote science through the medium of ST- and that has been lost now in these films which pay no heed to this tennent of Trek.

so,did anyone watch the channel 5 prog tonight,8pm,about Star trek? It was quite good. There's 3 episodes apparantly so Il watch the next 2. Do like Leonard Nimoy, he's a character! And I think Zac Quinto looks remarkably like him, & carries off spocks mannerisms well. & yes,Mrs Figg,I think Anton Yelchin who plays Chekov is cute also !!!

Petty, No,it was about Gene Rodenberry & the very begining of his idea for a new Sci-Fi story. As its in 3 parts it will probably tell you more & more! It covered the ideas on the show, that in reality, are very much possible. There was a goodly amount of scientific stuff, quotes from those who knew Gene, design of the star ship, etc. Was interesting!
