Ha Ha ! Razz Now THATS how I feel bout Tolkien ! & why I get so angsty when trying to convey how I feel to others ? I may be wrong about things & how I see them? but, I cant shed how I feel. Its kinda ingrained. Im pretty flexable on a lot of topics, but some just stick in my throat !
(Oh I really wanna say...said the actress to the bishop...but I cant)

I object to it calling itself ST- as that sullies a genuinely noble heritage.
Lets just say the original Enterprise is in the Smithsonian and I doubt the new version will ever earn such an accolade.

surprise surprise, I dont agree its generic sci-fi, they are meant to be much younger so their characters and relationships are not as defined as the tv series, but they have made a hugely entertaining and charismatic start to the reboot, I think that if the original actors had somehow been able to reprise their roles maybe you wouldnt have felt it was so bad, I think it will take a while to accept the younger actors as actually being Spock and co. Its like I feel about Sherlock, for me only Brett is really Sherlock Holmes, I love Cumbers and Martins version, but I dont ever actually think he's the real Sherlock.

It has nothing to do with the actors. I think Urban is an excellent McCoy and Zach bloke a pretty decent Spock.
Its about a complete lack of ethics, science and aspiration.
Rodenberry was trying to represent a human utopia. It was an ideas show that questioned human actions, morality and assumptions. This reboot is not Rodenberry ideals.
It was never about big explosions, those were in service to the characters and the plot - the point of the show was something more significiant- thats why the Enterprise model hangs in the worlds largest museum alongside real world space exploration vechiles- because it had a big effect in the real world inspiring people into science and the human race into space.
This new ST is nothing like that and will inspire no one into science.
And thats the difference- this is spectacle.
ST was always about the substance first and foremost. It was science-fiction with just as much importance attached to the science as the fiction.

I think they were concentrating all their energies and focus on setting up these new actors as the characters. They had to make us believe they were authentic, which is very difficult due to the fact Shatner and co are so well loved and iconic. The next film will hopefully be more to your taste. because the first film was all about the characters and their relationships, this next film can start to focus on science and ethics.

Well you have a lot more faith than I do- the social comment seems about Dark Knight deep and rest is stuff blowing up going on the trailers.
And the first film did have to establish character but there was no science in it at all- there was the oppositie of science- plot convient suff dressed up as science- like how two ships falling into the event hrizon of a black hole simply pops you out at a different place and time in the universe- not only not based on any science but cotradicts what we do know and everythingin previous ST.
Mind you not a single part of the plot in the first film made the slightest bit of sense, so I am not holding out for much better this timeout either.

I enjoyed the first film for what it was, but I think you have more faith in JJ Abrams than even I do, Mrs Figg (not that I'm a big Abrams fan though). Razz

to be honest I dont give a monkeys about the science in ST, its entertainment and thats all I want from a film, I am more interested in the relationships between the characters, if I want science I read a book or watch Discovery Channel.
