Yeah.....That's more like 2003 I'm thinking. A 1980's mobile  looked like this:

In the 1970's I think they filled the whole trunk of your car and had a giant antenna on the roof.

I have always wondered about teleporting. You change all the bits in to an energy stream of some kind... but how do you know the person at the other end is the same person? If you believe in a soul... how does that work? Is it a carbon copy without a soul? Would the person in reality die and a kind of clone take its place that believes it is the same person but really not? Is it really just all the chemicals and neurons etc that make a person what they are?

Re replicator.... never understood why they couldnt make a giant replicator and replicate new ships instead of building them all.

That is the exact set of questions that means Dr McCoy hates using the transporter. As the 'original' is destroyed a pico second after the person is reconstructed at the other end he was never convinced he was the same person afterwards.

never understood why they couldnt make a giant replicator and replicate new ships instead of building them all.- LAnce

ST wiki-

"it is impossible to replicate objects with complicated quantum structures.
Additionally, read/write errors cause a number of single-bit errors to occur in replicated materials. Though usually undetectable to human senses, computer scanning can be used to reveal these discrepancies, and they may explain the frequent complaint (by some gourmets and connoisseurs) that replicated food and beverages suffer from substandard taste.
industrial replicators are used to replicate large components of ships, shuttlecraft, and other pieces of this sort, which are later used in shipyards to construct such vessels. "

the thing about the Soul is weird when you think about it. If the Soul does exist how could you teleport it without really gruesome things happening.

Bit like cloning. If you made an exact replica of me it would believe it was me but it's not. Is either one more real? Is the clone less me than me even though it is exactly the same?

I don't believe in the soul btw.

3D printers might just be the first step down the long road to replicators. (Although I don't know if they'll be able to do food or drink.)

I'm holding out for the holodeck. Cool
