I think, for once, us English were there this year too.

Well... Most of us anyway. Thought we would do better than we have but would have taken the quarters as a very successful tournament.

Yeah I said a while back that there was notably less in the build up of the usual certainties and expectations of winning that tend to surround World Cups and European Championships for England.

Its been a better attitude all round, healthier in my view, but not anywhere near as funny as you getting to the final and going out on penalties to Germany would have been!  Wink

Good result for Holland against Chile. They've been a decent side, hard to break down Chile in this tournament, and took some good counter attacking breaks for Holland to get the result.

Two policemen were horrified to find a number of the England football team playing football with a hedgehog yesterday.
They were just about to phone the RSPCA when they realised the hedgehog was beating them four nil.

Can they make him go to counseling or something? The first time was bizarre enough. The second time made me wonder if he had mental problems. Now it's just sad.

I suspect his world cup might over once they decide on punishment for him. Not like its the first time he has bitten someone during a game.
Its pretty weird really- he has a biting fixation!

Surprising result in the Argentina game- not that they won, just that there was 5 goals in a game that with the result going the way it did in the Iran match, meant nothing for either side, they were both through to the next round.

Still Argentina are like a different team when Messi goes off the park. A much more average looking one.

Bye bye Suarez- nine match ban and a fine.
I guessed right, his world cup is over.

Bet England wish he had bitten someone sooner!  Very Happy

4 month ban too... think little harsh on Liverpool.

As a Liverpool supporter, think it is time to cash in now regardless of his footballing talent.

Yeah it is harsh on Liverpool who invested their cash in a player who cant play now.
Not sure you'd get the money for him now, there a lot of clubs will look at his track record of biting people on the park and not think him worth the risk I reckon.

I feel when an offence is committed on international duty all bans handed out should be for international games only so as to avoid effecting clubs negatively this way.

I was disappointed because I knew I'd be at work all day today, but fortunately my manager brought his tablet (and the ESPN app) so we were able to watch (mainly listen) to the US v Germany game while working in the back room. Cheerleader Even though we lost, the final score line wasn't that bad considering it was ze Germans we were up against. Also, I've now forgiven Cristiano Ronaldo for everything since he scored the final goal which put Ghana away and confirmed that the US would win the tie-breaker for second place. Nod

On the topic of Suarez, I think the punishment he's receiving is reasonable. Yes, it sucks for Liverpool, but he'd already had one biting incident when they signed in. Now he's had two more, plus the racial abuse thing. The governing bodies can't just stand by and do nothing, so I don't think Liverpool fans have anyone to be mad at but Suarez himself. Just my two cents. Shrugging

Eldo - I think if his punishments were in line with the severity of his action then I would agree. In my view, there have been plenty of other, worse, actions that have resulted in punishments of far less.

FIFA have decided to make an example of him but I bet the next time a player does something worse (headbutts and stamping come to mind) they do not receive anything let alone in line with what has happened to Suarez for any of his incidents.

BTW - I think Suarez is a moron and deserved something harsh but also in perspective.

Just 2 that I know off the top of my head.... according to the authorities these are more acceptable.

Zidane - 3 match ban.

Ben thatcher - 8 match ban

I'm sure that FIFA has taken Suarez's history into account.  If Zidane had a history of headbutting people (and being a racist asshole), his ban might have been longer.  I can see where people are coming from saying that Suarez's actions in international play shouldn't affect the club level, though.  Forbidding him from even training with Liverpool does feel excessive to me. But again, he has a history of this, which makes me also understand why they want to make an example of him.

The Thatcher thing occurred in domestic club play, so he was punished by the FA, not FIFA, so I don't think it's really comparable.

The bitching and moaning about soccer from some people in the US is getting more and more hilarious as this becomes the biggest and most mainstream World Cup ever in the US. Laughing The BBC has a pretty decisive take-down of the latest round of complaints.
