Re: Manly Thread - Boys Only
My own experience over quite a few years, working with crews of approx. 10-20, is that things tend to run smoothest with something close to a 50% male/female mix.
There seems to be a tipping point when either group outnumbers the other by more than 2 to 1. Too many guys and they seem to start trying to outdo each other to prove the negative male stereotypes.
Too many women, same problem. Certain members of the group will begin striving to outdo each other in negative stereotypical female behavior.
In between 33% and 67% the stereotypes seem to cancel each other, perhaps because people are trying to act in a way they think is "normal" for the group.
The study I posted seems to point to this, that the stereotypical behavior is in at least partly driven by us all acting as we believe we're expected to. That's the power of stereotypes.

Re: Manly Thread - Boys Only
you mean this?
"It's always the same - golf clubs, gentlemen clubs - they always want to come in gibbering about equality or female orgasms or some other imaginary nonsense and then they just hang around being women - the whole point is to have somewhere where there are no bloody women. Its like they know - and wont let us!" - Petty
Re: Manly Thread - Boys Only
I largely agree with David's point, but actually I think once it's pure one or the other the pressure to conform to stereotypes disappears. If the ratio is unbalanced there's more competition, if the ratio is zero there's no competition.
While of course the overlap between the sexes swamps the average difference between them, it's so much more fun to act as though they are different species. I'd say the average difference between men and women is roughly equivalent to that between a northerner and a southerner of, well, any country. But it's so much more fun to say "The making of a mint julep is an art, and should never be attempted by a Yankee, a neophyte, or an engineer."

Re: Manly Thread - Boys Only
thats the same as a study i read about competitive behaviour. the study asked if it was true that women really are less competitive than men. Hence the lack of female top honchos, and it turned out that there was no difference between the sexes, the only difference was that men expected to do better than women, and women expected the men to do better. so the men fulfilled their own destinies by actually doing better by believing that they were more competitive. It is all down to social conditioning. the women believing that men were naturally hardwired to succeed whereas they the women were naturally hardwired to take the backseat. this was compounded by the belief in both groups that women would naturally sacrifice competitive behaviour in the workplace for the benefit of children. ie taking time off etc.

Re: Manly Thread - Boys Only
I can speak only for all male crew and all-but-one female crews, but my experience is that the competition doesn't diminish at zero. There comes a point on all male crews where all discussions involve poo, sex or both (I have a theory that this is why some monasteries impose a vow of silence. )
All-but-one female crews........well I'd rather not talk about it...
