no the behind the scenes footage shows him walking fast up to him, they're both standing on the ground.

Yeah, I doubt that's a final shot. To get the scale right they have to have the camera in a very specific location, but if it's just a rehearsal or if the camera filming for the production vids is in a different location than the main camera the scale will appear different.

3D doesn't allow the use of forced perspective though. Effectively the 3D camera needs to be in 2 places at once, and only one of them will give the size illusion. When viewed in 3D the actors will just look a long way apart rather than big/small. That's why all the green screen crap in Hobbit compared to LotR.

fixed the typo. "a long way apart." For example some of the scenes in LotR where Gandalf and Frodo are talking face to face. If you viewed them in 3D, Gandalf would look like he was right in front of you while Frodo would look to be 20 feet away and still the same size as Gandalf. 3D completely kills the illusion.

And when they fix it with green screen the acting seems to become less natural and the visuals look more CGI.

Could be, but it looked like someone strapped a Toothless (from HTTYD) costume on a dog to me.
