Meanwhile, Michael Palin in Brazil is about to come on. Settling myself in.

Fargo ended last night. Went out with a bang. Really good series, and I came back every week. Sometimes I'll start watching a show and forget about keeping up with it, not with Fargo. I'd highly recommend it.

It's gotten great reviews from the critics too. You don't have to be familiar with the movie to enjoy the show, but it does help in one instance (although this instance isn't necessary to the ultimate conclusion of the story).

I watched the last episode of Wallander on BBC 4 tonight & it was sad. Ive always enjoyed the Swedish detective series & looked forward to it being on tv. I really liked Krister Henriksson playing Kurt Wallander. Now we know for definite that Kurt is ill & suffering from Alzheimer's. I thought Krister did a plausible job of a guy mentally declining. He did it so believable that I had a lump in my throat  Sad I shall really miss this program  silent

The movie has been on my "to watch" list for some time, but I kinda wrote off the series when I heard about it because turning a movie into an entire show sounded like a weird idea. I'll have to give both versions a try, though. Smile

Mmmmm, K. Branagh did have a go at playing Wallander, but in my opinion he wasnt a match for the Swedish guy at all  Evil or Very Mad Id go so far as to say Branagh was so wooden he killed it.

Got to agree there- he wasn't a patch on the original.
I never understood how his version lasted to the end.

I can think of not one single reason why I would recommend the Brannagh version to anyone over the original unless the person was illiterate and unable to read subtitles.

I just watched a 70's US sitcom- All in the Family- it was that rare thing, a remake of a British tv show for America that wasn't bloody awful.

Its the US version of Till Death Us Do Part, and whilst its softer and lighter than the UK version, less gritty more Hollywood if you like (celebrity guest stars and the main characters are noticeably younger) they didn't ruin the premise for once or miss the entire point of the characters (yeah looking at you Red Dwarf US, both times  Mad ) although I thought they made Archie (their Alf Garnett)  just a bit too sympathetic and likeable.
If you know Till Death Us Do Part you know instantly who everyone is.

And the Uk original- (Sherlock fans keep an eye for a young Uma Stubbs)

But I am curious as to how it went down in the US at the time, and for any US folks who have watched it more recently what do you make of it now?

I've watched a lot of All in the Family this past year as it is in re-runs on one of the local stations. I enjoy the show for the most part, but I do feel like they make Archie too likeable for some of the things he does/says.

While the overall tone does remain lighthearted, there are some tough issues that are tackled. However, this can have a jarring effect because of the conflicting tones (kind of like in The Hobbit movies). One episode has a man who can't find a job out on a ledge ready to jump to his death. There are a lot of jokes during this sequence, mostly from Archie as he tries to talk him down. It's a scary thing, someone about to commit suicide, and it's odd that they'd play it up for laughs.

I didn't know it was based on a British sitcom. Shrugging I'll have to check it out.

Here's a good episode. Tackling what was a tough subject at the time. Plus it's pretty relevant today for anyone who's been present at an uncomfortable dinner/family-gathering situation.

Thanks Bungo, I'll give that a watch later.

I a trying to think if there is a modern equivalent- a comedy with broad appeal that tackles hard subjects and covers generational differences in social attitudes? Dont think there is.

Yeah, I can't think of any similar shows these days. Most of the comedy these days sucks, or is just not funny (looking at you Big Bang Theory). I sound like an old person. Shrugging

Any episodes of Till Death Do Us Part that you would recommend, Petty?

I should point out that the clip Petty showed with Sammy Davis Junior is not classic Archie Bunker - he's being way nicer than usual. The character is famous for racist and sexist rants, normally.

what about My Family  Laughing

srsly though I only used to watch it because Zoe Wanamaker had been in Harry Potter, sad as it may seem I was going through post HP grieving period and it made me feel closer to Hogwarts.

My Family  Mad

The oddest sort of all sitcom types- a UK made sitcom made by American sitcom makers- its just weird I think, neither one thing or the other.
