Re: Television programmes
Okay, but let Sean Bean finish Game of Thrones first! Actually screw that, it's on the outrageously expensive sky! Ah well, there's always DVD boxsets...and torrents...

Re: Television programmes
I'm looking forward to Game of Thrones. I like Sean Bean, but I'm worried that seeing him in another fantasy story will leave me saying "Hey look, it's Boromir!" every time he shows up. ASOIAF is an engaging story though, so I'm fairly confident that won't be the case.
Re: Television programmes
Agreed! There are more deaths in the opening 2 pages of the book than in the whole of LOTR! Well I'm exaggerating- but only slightly! Though I'm not counting all those epic battles in LOTR, I'm not sure of the scale of the battles in GOT yet. Just coming up to the fist major battle with Robb leading the way! Gosh, I hate Sky though...!
Let's hope it that good that when you next see LOTR you go "oh, that's the guy from ASOIAF!" I won't be able to judge for a while sadly, as it usually taken while to be released on DVD after it's been aired!

Re: Television programmes
I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to watch it, but we got cable a few months ago and we have HBO, which is making the show as well as airing it in the U.S. It'd be wild if Sean Bean can top his Boromir (his was one of my favourite performances in LOTR).
Re: Television programmes
Lucky you! It's on Sky Atlantic over here, which is insanely overpriced. Not the channel itself, but Sky in general. It's absurd! I heard that BBC shared a good relationship with HBO but evidently Sky has out priced the beeb. Probably after their last forage into American telly- showing The Wire at midnight for 5 days running, what the hell guys!- maybe it's a good thing.
I admit he did die perfectly! Still brings a tear to my eye!

Television programmes
The Wire is a great show also from HBO. Apparently Sky bought the rights to HBO's entire catalog sometime a few months ago, though, according to a post on George R.R. Martin's "Not a Blog".
Re: Television programmes
Split this out of the LOTR humour thread so we can discuss it without being wildly off-topic.

Re: Television programmes
Are you deliberately trying to confuse me by splitting threads in half? I know, I was gutted when I heard. Though I've have plenty of the books left to get my teeth into (only 3/4 through GOT!) Plus I watch too much telly as it is. Watched all 7 hours of Beatles anthology last weekend. I'm just hoping he finishes the series...because that would be so annoying.

Re: Television programmes
I don't watch a whole lot of TV in general, and I try to avoid sitcoms when I can, so I haven't seen Episodes The only current sitcom I've really been amused by - The Big Bang Theory - I can only take in small doses.

You're in for a treat then! The series gets better throughout the first three books, and A Storm of Swords is in my opinion the single best fantasy novel to be published since LOTR. The fourth book moves rather slowly and is IMO not quite up to the standards of the first three, but it's still damn good, and is hopefully just the odd one out.
Re: Television programmes
My mum watches The Big Bang Theory! She also watches How I Met Your Mother!

I like Big Bang Theory. I should really despise it, but makes me giggle anyhow. It gets a bit tedious sometimes, but it mostly okay! Haven't seen How I Met Your Mother, but I'm sure it's great also!
Yes, that's what someone told me, that after the frantic pace of the first few, it drops of a bit. I'm not sure if this is true but I was told that one of the books got so complicated that Martin just gave up and started from scratch! Wouldn't surprise me, the depth really is staggering!

That explains I imagine some of the jokes based around the industry then. But quality wise Episodes is head and shoulders above Friends which used every situation comedy rule in the book and played it very safe.

Re: Television programmes
Hah! My sister was watching a full season of that show a few weekends ago, and I sort of passively watched several episodes, up to the point where I started actively watching them, eager to know what came next Luckily I came to my senses and left the room before I got hooked, what a blow to my manhood it would have been if I got hooked on Vampire Diaries (Must admit I already experienced a shrinkage of manhood after I found myself wanting to know what happened next - the same, I can hardly bear it to this day )

The Vampire Diaries is great, so much better than the books! (Though I confess I never really read them much, Twilight has put me off the whole vampire book genre)
No shame in liking it, I'd say. (Though I don't actively go round declaring that I'm a fan mind you!)

Re: Television programmes
Well, I read the first Twilight book before all this hooha arrived. I thought it wasn't great, nor too bad. Averagely written too, I felt. I got up to Eclipse (third one I think) finished it, then gave up. The characters were all one dimensional, never changing, each one seemed to be a Mary Sue each book. So I gave up, read Harry Potter from start to finish all over again!
Never read The Host, though I've seen it in Smiths a few times. What's it like?

Re: Television programmes
Based on an earth that has been taken over by parasitic 'souls' in Human bodies. it follows the story of one of these souls in a host whose consciousness never fades, leaving two personalities in one body. It plays on ideas about how the body defines the personality and also how we interact with the unknown (humans pecetion of the alien and alien perceptions of us humans), with obligatory love story!
