Re: Doctor Who [4]
Its spreading the Who- increasing audience awareness and brand recognition and increasing likelihood of future sales in merchandising.
And if the BBC didnt want it freely available- it wouldnt still be there after all this time on Yuotube- they are not slow at taking down what they dont want.
Not that you wanted a serious answer but I give you them in the hope it at least makes you crabbit!

Yeah the effects go from rather nice to wonderfuly old skool throughout the episode.
But what did youmke of the ep itself- given its controversial reception with many hailing it as the worst epiosde of NuWho ever and many claiming it among the best Nuwho ever- where do you come down on that line Amarie?
I can't quite decide. Definitely not the worst (Titanic and Astrid comes to mind...). It had the feel of a 9 or 10 episode. I don't know. It's forshadowing, I imagine? With all the times
- Spoiler:
- grandfather was mentioned, Clara being a constant supernanny...

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Conituining proofof the Moffat adage to complaining adults that Nuwho is too complicated- 'If you dont understand an episode, find a child to explain it to you.'
Contains complete spoilers for Hide.
Amarie I agree with foreshadowing and the echoes of past times. Obviously thats a 50th thing too but its also got to play into the plot of the story, as in-universe its not an anniversary year!
I am enjoying however how Matt is getting a chance to reflect some of the more grandfatherly paternal traits now too that Doctors 1, 2 and 3 in particular were known for. For me its put the icing onto the cake of Matts interpretation of the previous versions plus his own twist- in that respect it is very lucky for Who, and to Moffats credit in the casting, that he is the Doctor for the 50th. He is oddly well suited for it.

So far so good. I enjoyed the young Amy's matter-of-fact-ness when the doctor showed up hungry. I liked the small village vibe where everybody seems to know Amy and accept her stories of the Raggity Man, whatever they may think privately. I get the feeling that neither the Doctor or Amy have hit their strides yet, which is appropriate in the arc of the story. River on the other hand is completely in her element, both in acting and story. Beyond that I'm going to withhold judgement and see where when and how things develop.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
The interesting thing regards your comments about River there are, without giving anything of her mystery away, that Alex Kingston was the only one in the cast Moffat told about River- she knows all about River and why she is important to the Doctor from her first appearence in series 5.
According to Doctor Who confidential Matt, Karen, and Arthur use to to try to wheedle the info out of her.
But it does explain perhaps why you noticed how comfortable and at ease she is in the character.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Review time. Spoilers as always.
- Spoiler:
- Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS is a big title to live up to.
Although not one with too much competion in Who history.
We have seen suprisingly little of the rest of the ship over the years.
Mainly for budget reasons the few 'inside the ship' stories reveal endless corridors, right up until last series Doctor's Wife it was pretty much just corridors.
The last time Who tried to set an entire episode inside the TARDIS there was also a BBC strike- so in Classic era the inside was corridors plus the interior of an old hospital.
We have seen the Cloister Room in 4th Doctor and 8th (where the warning cloister bell is), and a bedroom or two, a kitchen, and a part of the wardrobe during 10th's run.
So what does tonights episode bring to the table?
Well its better than a hospital, but there are still a lot of corridors. And whilst some things we only glimpse through doors (like the swimming pool) we get a better look at what seems to be the Doctors room of collected personall stuff, the library, complete with a History of the Time War book, the engine room, the bit thats responsible for creating and building all the other bits and the Eye of Harmony (last seen in the 8ths TV movie annd occasionaly mentioned but never seen or explained in NuWho).
Oh and this being Doctor Who we also get some burnt up zombie monster types stalking the corridors who seem to be TARDIS inhabitants as the Doctor seems to know what they are; looking like the burn baddies in Silent Hill- all blackened skin and firey orange wound marks like a crust over lava.
There is also a 30 minute countdown until the Tardis goes boom. But the Doctor starts that threat.
So we have a setting, monsters and a countdown. What we need now is a plot.
And that is where it all goes a bit sketchy.
The episode begins with the Doctor trying to persuade Clara to talk to and get on with the TARDIS- she refuses as she thinks its mad to talk to the TARDIS.
So the Doctor puts the ship into basic flight mode and decides to teach Clara how to fly her.
At the same time a pair of brothers, the Van Baalen Brothers, and their android, Tricky, who make up a deep space salvage team who almost certainly dont fill in the correct paperwork, pick up the TARDIS and fire an electromagnetic pulse thingy at it so they can grab her and bring her in.
With Clara flying, shields down, the TARDIS gets badly damaged and taken on board.
Stephen Thompson who wrote this episode also wrote Curse of the Black Spot, and it has a scene in it where Amy is taken prisoner below deck by a crewman- and then next time you see her she is nicking pirate gear and going to the rescue- what happened to the crew guy? He isnt ever seen or mentioned in the episode again, leading to speculation of a cut scene.
Likewise here there appears to be a missing scene.
Pretitles sequence the Doctor and Clara are in the console room when things go wrong. A small bomb like device rolls across the floor and Clara picks it up and it burns her hand and she drops it and there is a blinding flash of light and the titles sequence begins.
Exit titles and the TARDIS is lying in the cargo bay amongst the salvage junk with the Doctor outside and Clara locked inside the TARDIS.
How did they get seperated? Why is the Doctor outside and not Clara? Why were they seperated beyond the need of the plot to seperate them so the Doctor can go look for her?
I suspect there will be more missing scene speculation over this one.
The three salvage guys, the brothers and the android are lightly drawn characters and all three are pretty stupid, although this I dont mind so much as they are recognised as being such within the plot, as the Doctor says, "I won't be asking you to join my quiz team."
There is an idiot who is in charge by virtue of not being as big an idiot as his older brother, and there's the android, Tricky, but I will come back to him.
The Doctor leads them into the TARDIS on the promise of the greatest salvage ever, once inside he shuts the doors on them and enlists them to help find Clara by threatening them.
When they refuse he sets the TARDIS auto-destruct for a hour, when they persist in refusing he makes it half an hour and asks if any one fancies trying it in fifteen.
There are shades of both's the 6th Doctors boiling barely undercontrol anger, and a hefty dose of the 7th's manipulations in this scene.
The Doctor- "Don't get into a spaceship with a mad man. Didn't anyone ever teach you that?"
By episode end we learn the Doctor was lying, there was no self destruct, it was a bluff. The anger and manipulation might be 6 and 7 but the Doctor going on to critique his own performance, that is pure 11.
Clara meanwhile is stuck wandering the Tardis corridors, at first its all fairly safe and intriguing, a glimpse of the pool, finding the Doctors personal room wih the cot from A good Man goes to War, Amy's Tardis, the library, with the Encyclopedia of Gallifrey contained in liquid form in bottles.
And most importantly she finds a book entitled the Last Great Time War and flicks through it, learning in the process of the Doctors part in it, and his name.
Clara- "So that's who."
But it not long before she is doing a very classic companion thing- running away down a corridor from a monster screaming!
Meanwhile the Doctor and salvage team split up, with devious idiot sending his brother, bigger idiot, back to the console room to rip it apart for salvage. And in doing so we get ghost voices from the past as he pulles the panels away; "A thing that looks likes a police box standing in a junk yard, it can move anywhere in space and time?" from Ian in the first ever episode to Amy's exhuberant cry of "We are in space!" taking in Susan explaining what TARDIS means, Teagan from the 5th Doctor's inside the TARDIS story, the 4th Doctor explaining to Leelee how the ship is bigger on the inside and the 10th's line about the ammased hordes of Ghengis Khan not being able to break down the door- all voices from the console rooms past.
In the interim the brother in charge of the trio has found a room which his scaner tells him contains -everything.
Everything turns out to be a sort of tree thing with light globes on it- living metal, it can manifacture anything you want (its how the TARDIS regens, alters shape, rooms ect),
But despite the Doctors assurence the TARDIS will not let them leave if the idiot tries to take one of the glowy nodules, being an idiot he does it anyway.
The Doctor- "I can feel a TARDIS tantrum coming on....Ever see a spaceship getting ugly?"
The older idiot hacking up the console room decides to clamber beneath it, the ladder heats so it burns his hands and he falls off and gets roasted by a zombie type. Leaving the other brother and the andriod to likewise be chased by what appears at first to be two burning zombies but on closer inspection turns out to be two fused together at the shoulder and arms.
The Doctor- "I'm sorry."
Clara meanwhle, no matter where she runs ends back up in the console room, only one without exit doors. (The exact same thing happened to Teagan in the time of the 5th Doctor).
And the same thing happens to the Doctor and his motley band too.
It doesnt take the Doctor long to work out the TARDIS is trying to protect them- the console room is the safest room on the ship, so she has replicated it at different places and times so they stay safe. And to work out Clara is in an echo of the same room.
Whilst the Doctor tries to work out how to bring her to them Clara acidently lets her zombie monster in, and they get a good long, almost sympathetic look at each other, before the Doctor drags her out and to relative safety and some top quality old fasioned companion screaming from JLC.
Clara- "Good guys do not have zombie creatures! Rule one of basic story telling!"
With Clara back the Doctor reveals there was no countdown, except when he ges to switch it off he discovers the engines really are going to explode, and they have to get to them, and quickly.
But whilst on the way down to the engines Clara get seperated and starts seeing echoes in time, first of herself, then of the Doctor before the real Doctor finds her and explains there is a tear somewhere in the fabric of Time.
When we come to see this 'tear' it looks remarkably like the cracks in the universe and in Amy's wall, only running vertically. Even the light pouring out is the same.
The Silence are a series 5 arc in origin, is Moffat going to tie it all up?
So a quick chase down some more corridors with Clara's former zombie burny person in pursuit and the Doctor insisiting Clara not ask about them, as she really doesnt want to know, but there is not much time for asking as the TARDIS engines are, for reasons best not dwelling on, firing metal rods through the walls.
One of which impales Tricky the android.
At which point the Doctor points out the obvious- Tricky is not an android but a human.
He was the bright one, and Captain of the three idiot brothers it turns out, but had lost his sight and vocal cords in a salvage operation along with his memory. His brother had decided when he awoke with syntheitc voice box and bionic eyes to tell him he was an android, 'for a laugh'.
So they rescue the wounded Tricky from the spike and outrun the burny zombies, to the Eye of Harmony, the power source of the TARDIS.
"An exploding star in the act of becoming a black hole. Time Lord technology. You rip the star from its orbit and suspend it in a permenent state of decay."
Unfortunetely with fused zombie at one door and single zombie at the other they are trapped in the space where the Eye is, and being in its presence too long will burn the flesh off you.
So with imminent death Clara demands to know what the zombies are.
Clara- "It's me. I burn in here."
The future has been leaking as well as the past it seems, and conformation comes quickly when the two brothers get caught by there own time echoes, burning and fusing into the zombie version of themselves. And Clara is next in line to go the same way.
Making a quick get away the Doctor and Clara head for the beautifuly envisioned engine room, whch is suspended in midexplosion. And there is some lovely moments from Matt in this scene as the Doctor realises the TARDIS is dying.
Clara- "I think I am more scared of you than anything on that TARDIS."
On route to the engine room the Doctor and Clara get some character time- where he reveals to her the previous versions he has met, and comes to the realisation she really is 'just Clara' and she doesnt know what he is talking about.
The resolution to it all this is going to irrate many- because it is a reset switch. Remember the bomb like thing Clara picked up at the start and it burnt on her hand? And that 'tear' in time?
Well the Doctor puts a mesage on the bomb like device, sends it through the crack, sorry tear in time to be picked up by Clara, burning the message into her hand which the Doctor gets which tells him what to do.
The message, in a style both fitting to Who's cheekiness and the 11th incarnation is - "Big Friendly Button".
The Doctor hits the button on the device and resets the day, so Clara forgets what she saw in the book about the Doctor and the knowledge about her own past incarnations.
Well, perhaps, as we see the three salvage brothers as the TARDIS signal blips away on their screen and idiot brother showing a slight change of heart towards the 'android'.
Ok this was a weird episode for me. There is lots in it I really liked. I particularly liked the scenes between the Doctor and Clara.
Unlike the Doctors Wife this was a badly damaged, frigthened TARDIS, and we didn't really learn much more about her in the same way, save that she can be quite a worrying place when she is afraid.
For all the glimpses of the library and engine room, and Eye of Harmony, there was still it felt a lot of corridors.
It somehow felt like the budget episode of the series even though I am not sure it was.
The resolution, whilst neatly solving all the problems, is a literal push a big button and everyone wakes up resolution, its as well executed as any of this type I have seen in terms of all the components being sown into the plot, but there is no disguising it.
In that sense its resolution felt very 10th Doctor.
Which is interesting as several of the storylines and style of episode- from the London centric Bells to this one have had a RTD whiff about them- and we know 10 is back in the anniversary- is Moffat delibretly blending the two styles of Nuwho together for the anniverary?
The odd lingering feeling I am left with after seeing this episode is that some things are better left to the imagination- and whilst there is far more of her we didnt see than we did, it nevertheless somehow made her seem les big on the inside than before.
And that perhaps is why in 50 years of the show there have only been 3 attempts I can think of set exclusively in the TARDIS interior.
Overall its certainly better than his previous episode Curse of the Black Spot but somehow feels, like it, a little flat throughout.
Good ideas, some good performances from Matt and JLC and a servicable plot, but yet the whole never seems to reach the promise of its premise.
Given the hospital interior and corridors of the original attempts at the inside- I would have bitten off my hand to see this sort of stuff inside the TARDIS back then- I perhaps should not judge so harshly that there are still a lot of corridors inbetween.
But it just doesnt live up to the impossible billing.

According to Doctor Who confidential Matt, Karen, and Arthur use to to try to wheedle the info out of her.
But it does explain perhaps why you noticed how comfortable and at ease she is in the character.
that's kinda cool it's what Rowling did with snape
Re: Doctor Who [4]
I rewatched last night episode and something I didnt quite catch last night now seems rather odd-
- Spoiler:
At the end, but before the big reset Clara reveals she knows his name, we saw that when she read the Time War book and said, 'so that's who."
But what she says, or starts to say to the Doctor before he cuts her off is-
"You call yourself Doctor, why do you do that? You have a name I've seen it in one corner of that tiny..."
One corner of that tiny what? What was she about to say? She read his name in a book it seemed, this is an odd way to start to describe reading it in a book. Any suggestions to what she was on about?
