I honestly dont know how you can look at those stills and still say that. Visually and in how its being shot I do not think its ever been done better, despite concessions to budget cuts. There are less effects, less expensive shots, more reusing of sets and relighting and redressing corridors to run down, but in terms of cinematography, direction and design this is as good as I have ever seen the show.

I'd say the smaller planet and the one the view is taken from are both in orbit round the big orange one. Probably.

I'm going to suggest that the large orange one and the one we're viewing from may be a close binary pair, and the small one may be in a larger orbit outside the orbits of the pair, all three orbiting the common center of mass of the three.  I think in theory it's a more stable orbit.... or maybe not.

As for the orbits, I'll have to sit down and figure out which produces smaller tidal forces from the orange planet: a moderate sized close one, or a distant large one - given the same solid angle.

Interesting - I would have expected that the tidal forces would be smaller for a distance large object, but it turns out that though the percentage change in force with distance is smaller (related to the tidal force), the total force is larger, and the two cancel out.

So long as the angle taken by orange planet is the same (and the density!), we get the same chances of tidal earthquakes. So the same chances of them buildings staying in place. But I would think given the picture the tidal forces would be pretty large.

Well spotted! It was indeed a bit tricksy!

mountains, clouds, planets...maybe even buildings come pre-packaged (with adjustable parameters). Not so with oddly shaped alien spaceships. very impressive.

Other way round actually- the ships are pre-packaged models (bit of tweaking for reflectivity ect but basically they come ready to go-well some do) its the mountains, clouds, atmosphere, lighting ect that I have to create from scratch.

I like the sunset effects.

But don't you have cloud, tree and mountain generators, with fractal kernals, that you set up and let it go?
