I didn't do well at that in school. My report read

Still no idea what that means

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I'm sure Eldo had something on topic to say, or on a topic anyway...aha..
right...
'AUJ failed to develop 10 of the 13 dwarves. It didn't change their characters from the books or have scenes that didn't make a lot of sense, but the vast majority had no characterization whatsoever. Some barely had dialogue.'
This is true of the book also, but you could argue in a film more needs to be done to introduce more dwarves. I disagree as I believe the gentle gag running throughout of there being so many dwarves works just as fine on screen. Only a few dwarves need be notably featured. Although I would add more than PJ gave us it is true.
But why is there not the room for the characters to be more introduced, why do at least one or two more dwarves not have the odd line here or there, say at Rivendell, or any of the spots the story takes a breather?
The answer of course is three fold. PJ mistrusts Tolkiens dialogue in a modern audiences ear, if he had floowed the book closer he would have had more dialogue, there is dialogue there he never used.
Secondly to make room for spectacle.
And thirdly becuase they cant write a conversation with more than four peopel in it well. There could have been mre speaking parts round the table at Bag End helping establish obvious broad brush personlaity strokes, had it not all descened into everyone thupi gtheir fists and shouting 'Rhubarb', twice.
Whilst fotR is not ruined as film in the same way by these deficits, the deficits of losing proper character building to make space for spectacle, and of not trusting the source are both present.
'AUJ stretched its source material to the breaking point and beyond. There was no reason for it be such a long movie.'
The length of the film as we can both agree is not the fault of the source. So he fault must be PJ's and it in lies in his inability to tell the story as is- to assume that if there is not a regular dose of over the top action, a fight scene, or some bad guy dialogue his audience will not pay attention.
It is again spectacle which stretches the film. When I took the spectacle back out or down to a sensible level and concentrated solelyon the story I lost an hour from the films running time.
This fault is also true of LotR's but again not suffiently to ruin it as a coherent film. (Except to people like me who have to edit it out just to be able to watch it)
'As a result, it had shit pacing.'
So in my view does TT and RotK- the average moviegoer had no sense of when, or if, RotK was going to end, hence the complaints. Its awfully paced.
Much of the intercutting between theads seems to have been shuffled about a lot as if they didnt know how it should be put together.
'The musical score for AUJ, while still pretty good, used the main theme way too much and depended too much on elements of the LOTR soundtrack. One of many examples is using the Nazgul theme for Azog.'
I would in general agree there but i supect Pj's desire to bloat the film with extra made up stuff of his own and endless spectacle meant the score was for 2 films until far too late in the day- my impression of it i it is stretched like butter over too much bread. Again attributable to the same PJ vices evident as far back as Fotr.
'AUJ felt less like a movie that could stand on its own and more like something that was just riffing off the previous films.'
This is true, although I would argue it is the same set f Pj vices againn that can be seen at play just writ super large in bold type and with fireworks going off from it, whih makes it unable to stand on its own as a movie. Thescale of things Pj did wrong n the LotR's film maginfied is to large for the film to bear
The ending was terrible.
So is RotK- it doesnt even make any sense within the story told on screen.
Ask someone who has never read the books what happens at the end? Why is Frodo going on the ship? Where is the ship taking him to? What does it mean for Frodo? Why cant he just sail back?
See how many have an aswer- good ending to a film trilogy?
See, I still think we are in agreement. Everything wrong in TH stems from the same set of problems PJ displayed from the start. All thats changed is the scale of them. They are nothig new.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Isn't it all frozen and cold up there? Even if you meant a hoe for gardening I would have thought it was too cold to be getting any 'tools' out.

Thank Eru for that! My keyboards still working.

I am assuming they are hard working hoes, with a good sturdy grip.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I had a good hoe. Back went though one day when I was being a bit vigorous behind the rasberry patch.

Wow - got very quiet when I left last night. Think I have recovered from all the confusion. Still don't know what emma had to do with anything... or what I was clicking.... or who me and CC12 35 were supposed to be marrying.

Interview with Azog
http://www.empireonline.com/interviews/interview.asp?IID=1660
Contains such gems as-
Did you ever ask what exactly it is that Azog The Defiler defiles?
No!
'But Peter's told me that he's going to build Azog up over the next two films, so I'm getting plenty to do. His motivation is to hunt down little old Thorin Oakenshield, the guy who took his arm off, and chop off a couple of limbs in return. He's got his sights set on a rematch.'

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Q: Nice. There's an extended cut of An Unexpected Journey coming out this Christmas. Will it contain any bonus Azog?
A: No, because when I was brought in they'd already cut the film. For some of the scenes I had to move through frames doing actions that would be placed over the top of Conan's performance. It got pretty frantic while we were in ADR, finding the voice for the character. The sound guys were chucking in leopard growls and dropping my voice right down to super-deep baritone.
Wow, no wonder Azog was so awful.
