Re: Star Wars
I really liked this article about the way people talk and write about fictional universes, using the example of Star Wars.

Re: Star Wars
I just watched Attack of the Clones last night. It was perhaps only the third time in my life I have done so, and I was reminded why.
• The acting of the two main characters, Padme and Annakin, is painful to watch.
We all know Natalie Portman can act, and we've seen great actors make horrible lines sound good. So I blame this all on her inability to relate to the woodenness of Hayden Christiansen. They had probably a thousand young actors to choose from, why HIM?
• The Plot doesn't hold together
- If Padme was planning to vote for accepting the clone army, why is Count Dooku trying to kill her?
- when Obi-wan visits the planet with the clone army, he gives every indication that he has no clue what's going on, yet they still assume he's an official envoy to inspect the army.
- We have C3PO and R2D2 in front of Anakin all the time, yet the later Darth Vader doesn't seem to recognize them.
It goes on and on. Some nice imagery, but otherwise a complete mess. I have to go watch a Plinkett review to cheer me up.

Re: Star Wars
I'm pretty sure Padme was the leader on the anti-military faction. She would have opposed the Clone Army if she'd been present for the vote. Palps managed to manipulate Jar Jar Binks into supporting it because Jar Jar is an idiot.
Re: Star Wars
yeah, I remembered it wrong, the Plinkett review straightened me out. Clearly I'm no brighter than Jar-Jar.

Re: Star Wars
Something I've been thinking about ever since I watched BOFA: would I rather watch the SW prequels, or hobbit movies? I still don't know what my answer would be.

Re: Star Wars
Simul.
I've thought about this too. I think it'd have to be the SW prequels for me, both cause of the lingering nostalgia I have for them and because while they're bad, they don't annoy me by stomping on a book that I love. I'm not in a hurry to revisit either though.

I've been leaning towards the SW prequels too.

Re: Star Wars
I don't think I'd say that the prequels were better films overall, mainly because of the acting and dialogue. I do think they were better paced and had better music though.
Re: Star Wars
I'd say the dialogue of both trilogies was pretty equal (compare the scene between Anakin and Padme with Kili and Tauriel, or pretty much any scene from DOS and BOFA). The SW prequels get points for not being overly drawn out. Agreed on the music, Williams beats Shore any day in my book.

Ugghh.... difficult question. In both cases I have only see the the two first movies and I am quite happy with leaving it at that.

But it's still Natalie Portman, so it doesn't really matter, does it?

That is certainly one of those "pest eller kolera" sort of questions.

Edit: I just saw the Yoda pic on the new page and burst out laughing. His face, man... Oh god, I needed that. Thanks chris.

It's been too long since I've watched the SW prequels to comment in too much detail about the dialogue. I do think that there were several decent-to-good performances in The Hobbit movies, hampered by the material though they were. Whereas the only performances from the prequels that I recall fondly were Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid. I was a big fan of Shore's work on LOTR (though I know you have some objections to his style, which I respect). The Hobbit soundtrack was pretty unmemorable, though, partly because of the incessant reuse of LOTR themes. But even given everything wrong with the prequels, Williams still turned in some quality new work, with "Duel of the Fates" being the stand-out.

I didn't realize you'd skipped out on BOFA. I wonder how many people from this forum that makes.

I even thought "Battle of the Heroes" (which desperately needs a better title) was a great musical moment in Episode III.
