Re: Star Wars
i would like a femal protagonist in star wars, not necessarily kick arse, but female.. too few female heros i think now a-days, well, protagonists, main characters... in big budget movies.
Re: Star Wars
Yeah, I agree about that. I kinda doubt it will happen, but I a female main character in Episode VII would be nice.

i knoow, we have like Hermione, Katniss (sort of) and like Elizabeth Swan, they're the only female heros i can think of (oh yeah, of course Leia) that have been in big budget massive super movies, but none of them were main characters (strong and kinda cool, yeah, but they still werent the center, they either share the spotlight with a man or they are a second or even third character)

Yeah, that's the problem. Also, if you have a group of central characters, there's rarely more than one girl/woman in that group. It's unfortunate and self-limiting, but it's been the norm for so long that it's hard to break out of.
Re: Star Wars
yeah, it's like.. it becomes sort of too recognisable.. i mean, i saw this movie (anacondas) and i started seeing it in like the middle and i pointed out.
-handsome male protagonist
-female sexy love interest, gonna end up with handsome male protagonist, barely survives, male protagonists saves her in an epic scene
-the stupid, coward guy who is played for jokes
- the guy with knowledge and actually knows how to survive the fucking jungle = he's gonna die saving the the stupid, coward guy who is played for jokes
- good guy turning bad, one of the first to die.
- two or three meaningless character who's gonna die just to show that things can kill you, you're gonna forget them as soon as they're dead/have served their purpose.
- some sad grandma story and/or sad mom-daughter story where mom sacrifies herself.
- angry dad
- man (could be knowlegde guy, handsome guy or handsome-but-kinda-stupid-guy-and-probably-has-some-fued-with-female-love-interest-but-not-a-cool-enouhg-story-to-survive-the-first-five-minutes) who calms angry dad = angry dad dies.
the movie was shite. but there was a handsome guy there (who died because
a) not male protagonist
b) he is too smart and can survive the jungle easily and they kinda need him and the movie would be way shorter and have a much better outcome if they all listened to him and he survives
c) asia. can't have an asian hero, lol.
BONUS: a,b,c are equally correct answers.

Re: Star Wars
Problem is Hollywood has no idea how to do it- they can only put women in big budget films if they dont act like women.
The best female action hero is probably still Ripley in the first Alien film. And the script was written for a man- when they cast a woman they didnt change much and it works perfectly, the actress brings the femininity to the words, but the character is not comprimessed by hamfisted attempts to write a 'female character'.

I think this is the problem. Too many screenwriters get caught up in writing "female characters" that they treat women like an alien species and forget that they're people too. Even writers who get praised for creating "strong female characters" often just tap into different stereotypes rather than meaningful characterization (Joss Whedon is the example that springs to mind for me).

Well yeah, but we were talking about Star Wars and it'd be nice to see a blockbuster that had some artistic aspirations.

yeah, i know. they simply can't write (well, mostly, brave was good, but a woman wrote that) female characters good enough. take a lesson from george r.r. martin. write them as fucking human beings goddamit, they just have boobs and a vagina ... and maybe even sometimes other priorities than men. like kids. and not-war.. or not.

yes. exactly. stereotypes (that was what i was trying to get across)
either helpless in-lovething
kick arse like them boys.. really a boy with boobs.
needs to be saved
and it in 99% of cases ends with love....
Re: Star Wars
again. George R.R. Martin (his name is that right?) had a wonderful reply to "how do you write women so well" he just "well, i'de like to think of them as people"
i would write more crabbit reviews, but my computer is getting overheated and i think it deserves a break and it is 03:22...!

I'd rather not resign myself to defeatism though, particularly given the unprecedented cultural influence wielded by mass media in general and mega-blockbusters in particular. Movies shape the way in which people see the world and I think it's counter-productive to just completely cede that cultural realm to the forces of apathy and ignorance.
- Spoiler:
- Maybe that was hip and thinky enough to get through to CC!
Re: Star Wars
It is odd- there are strong female characters in earlier writing- its really mainly our own time that females are so poorly represented as rounded, real characters.
I wonder why? You'd think with more equality in law, and the work of feminism, there would be more postive and strong female roles, not less. Any guesses why this might be?
