It's funny how the Oscars only mattered when lotr was nominated. Now they try to play it off as if they don't care.
Also I finished the first episode of season 2 of house of cards.

the soundtrack is something my brain really noticed even taking into account the fact that my eyes were struggling to take it all in, the music filtered in and it kind of added to the weirdery. I dont know if they used infrasound that low frequency stuff like Tigers use to put the willies up (I often wonder how that turn of phrase originated ) the prey, but it certainly is disquieting.

I do wish I had, as that would have meant I could have afforded to!
I notice a lot of talk around DOS to compensate for its lack of wins focusing on how much money it has made- with the first film eventually breaking 1billion dollars and DrOS going to get fairly close to that some 3-4 months from release.
But before the PJ cheerleaders get too excited about that, to put that in perspective GTA5 made over 1billion dollars in just the first 3 days of sales.
Global products can make global sized profits- and on that scale most film doesn't compete any longer with other global products.

Re: Oscar Watch
Not your fault Figg. But its most of a day to go see a film somewhere worth going to see a film, and a ferry and a train and it all quickly mounts up into an expensive day out.
But thats the sort of trade off you get for having stunning scenery right outside your front door. Id rather be poor and able to walk out my door and walk through fields and by lochs and over and under hill, than rich and stuck in the city.

- Spoiler:
- I was curious about the impact Zoe's death would have in the US version- in the UK original its how series 1 ends and he throws her off the roof-garden above Westminster rather in front of a train.
The relationship between them is also more deviously sexual in the UK version, in fact its downright creepy and uncomfortable with her calling him 'Daddy' and him moving in to open sexual manoeuvres with the words "I always wanted a daughter." Also he is haunted by it more in the UK version, suffering flashbacks to it (usually followed by an aside to the audience along the lines off "Well it had to be done." Anther notable difference is that the UK version is notably Macbeth, and not even in disguise he quotes Macbeth straight to camera at important points, and of course his wife is fully in the Lady Macbeth role- her role in the US version is one that is greatly expanded on. You dont get to see her day job in the UK version, there are no subplots around her, she is very important but only in the Lady Macbeth woman driving the man on sense

what I find ironic is the fact that Cuaron has quietly and modestly revolutionized cinematography, and cleaned up at the awards, whilst the self parading PJ has got diddly squat.

True, but video games retail for about 7-8 times as much as movie tickets, and their sales are even more front-loaded than movies. On the other hand, a single video game sale can be played by multiple people and there's very little chance of the same person buying it again, although repeat customers are not a huge part of movie ticket sales. But in the end, I don't think there's really a fair comparison to be made between the two different industries since they have very different circumstances.
That said, while DOS was certainly one of the most successful box office films of the year, it was still pretty far from the #1 spot. Reaching one billion (or $900 million, since it's questionable whether DOS will get to the fabled seven digit mark) is a pretty routine occurrence these days thanks to inflation and mark-ups, whereas back when LOTR came out it had only ever happened once before.
Re: Oscar Watch
Its fair to say the business models are different but they are both entertainment industry, they compete in the same marketplace, for peoples attention for entertainment- they both have to have scripts, characters, plots and build sets (and with all green screen films that last line is ever more blurred).
And whilst games do sell for more initially they have a lot more replay than films, last notably longer (Ive clocked up well in excess of 200 hours in Skyrim) and it doesn't cost you again to start at the beginning when you want to.
If you go see Dos three times in all its SuperHD 'glory' its already cost you more than a game at the lower end of the game market.

No, its not, but I do like Tarantino's films ! Everything seems so excessive ? The blood has to be by the bucket & bright red, lots of 'effing & jeffing', women ? Cant take any of it seriously

I liked Pulp Fiction, but found about 90 percent of Inglourious Bastards to be extremely dull.
I wish he wouldn't inject his foot fetish into his film making. It's gross.

Re: Oscar Watch
I think its a classic case of Emperors New Clothes when it comes to Tarantino. He was touted as the most achingly hip dude, everyone wants to be cool so everyone went along with the hype. plus his visuals are slick and its got sex, death, violence, perversity galore, its pretty cynical stuff but empty of any value.
whats weird is all the Italians are very proud of the Oscar for the Great Beauty, what they fail in some cases to realize its a scathing indictment of modern Italy, its ugly decadent underbelly, pretty much the Berlusconi years, but set against the beauty of the country in all its heartbreaking contradictions.

Re: Oscar Watch
I like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown seems entertaining enough (I'm also a Pam Grier fan) but I absolutely despise Django Unchained and I haven't seen Inglourious Basterdz (or however the fuck it's spelled) and have zero interest in watching it. I'm indifferent about the Kill Bill movies.
