I keep jumping on my bed because the new trailer of The Hobbit is so great that I need to celebrate. You, dear Martin Freeman, are the man.

And Ive gone on a Tolkien search of the video- and I think I finally found some!!

I have to say, very little of it 'feels' like the book.

You're right. There's this aura about this trailer that's off. Could be like petty said, how I don't recognize any of the dialogue. I didn't get this vibe from the other trailer. I'd give that one an 8/10. This is more like a 6. Disappointing.

You're disappointed because they're adding line after of line of genius in the form of words into 3 epic films because the book is so small? Who's faults thats now! PJ can do many things but even he cannot go back in time to convince Tolkien to write a longer book..because he would never get a visa

If I didn't already know who the film characters were from other sources, and didn't know a 'hobbit movie' was coming out, I'd had to sit down and cogitate and fuss and sweat a bit before figuring out this was supposed to be "The Hobbit".

4/10 on being the Hobbit, but if you don't worry about authenticity at all it will likely be entertaining enough.

The trolls don't talk. The stone giants sequence has been turned into yet another action sequence. Radagast is actually not technically in the Hobbit and he especially isn't supposed to be riding a bunny sled. Granted, we see a few wargs that look better (in my opinion) than the lotr ones. It has yet to be seen if the eagles will speak, but I'm betting that they won't be.

Ok, I finally got around to watching the alternative endings. Here's my thoughts-

The Bilbo one- the faint just does not work for me- there is no sense of Bilbo getting more and more pent up till he cant take any more so it doesnt seem justified and it just looks like a terrible staged fall.

The Gandalf one- its ok, I see what its doing but there was just something a bit crass and wrong to me about Gandalf taking the money- I dunno- just felt very un-Tolkien like to me.

Sting - given that line about it not having seen battle and hence no name- and that in the book it only first sees battle in Mirkwood against the spiders and gets its name Sting as a result- it makes the scene with Bilbo using it to fight a goblin even more worrying.

Gollum- Proving, if there were any doubt left in anyones mind, that the Coven cannot write in Tolkiens style, particulary when it comes to Gollum. Just embarassingly awful.

So I read through the whole thread here and I also rewatched the trailer a few times in glorious HD. I also watched all the alternate endings. After this, I stand by my initial positive reaction to the trailer, but in what I'm sure will come as a shock to everyone who is familiar with my thoughts about the movies, it wasn't without some reservations. In the interest of fairness and positivity, though, let me start right off the bat by saying that I thought the trailer looked visually beautiful in almost all of its shots and I am much more optimistic about the color design and SFX than I was before.

That said, something was bothering me about the trailer even in the parts that I liked, but I couldn't put my finger on it until the third or fourth time I saw it. That's when it clicked. From the music (which is probably just a placeholder until the score is complete) to the dialogue to the acting to the comedy to the set pieces this trailer reminded me far more of the Harry Potter movies than anything in PJ's LOTR. That's not automatically a bad thing, since both HP and The Hobbit are children's fantasy whereas LOTR is not. On the other hand, the trailer didn't feel a whole lot like The Hobbit book ... or the HP books, for that matter. It just felt like it had been made by the same crew who made the HP films, so on further reflection that's not really a great thing.

My favorite part of the trailer was the first minute or so, showing the Company assembling in the Shire. It felt closest to the book and seemed to have the fewest out of place elements. Even in the rest it did feel as if PJ was going for a different feel from LOTR, but I'm not sure if he was actually trying or if I'm just incapable of taking the events of The Hobbit seriously as an epic. One of the things that reminded me of HP was the sense of overwroughtness and too much self-importance. Neither HP nor The Hobbit is a grand, grave epic. Trying to be too serious has been the downfall of more than one fantasy film series, and I worry for The Hobbit in that regard. I'm hopeful that PJ might still be aiming for a distinct feel, though.

Anyway, I'm sort of rambling but I will say that this feels like an extremely Peter Jacksony trailer. Maybe my confirmation bias is at work but it feels like there are a lot of his unique trademarks present in contrast to (as has been said) not a whole lot of Tolkien. In conclusion, this didn't change my sense that the films will be very different from Tolkien's works, but it did make me a bit more hopeful that I'll at least enjoy them as Peter Jackson films. I just hope he's learned his lessons from King Kong.

I go with the flow. I'm a cool guy. I can't say or even type that without feeling like a liar. But this place is nice.

In regards to the Gandalf bit. I'm going to take whatever I can get that even resembles the Hobbit. Not very Tolkien. True. But like you said at least it's trying.
Also yes it looks like Jackson flubbed the scene that will make or break the Hobbit for me. The coven is falling right into the trap that I predicted they would; Riddles in the Dark has lame blockbuster comedy and Gollum is played in a way not to enhance the Hobbit but rather to remind audiences of lotr. Disappointing on the Coven's part for playing right into that.
