They cant even get his name right. He's magnificant or golden!!

I'm guessing that everytime they mantion smaug he will have a different title...

Yeah probably pulled out of a hat at random if the rest of the dialogue is anything to judge by.

They should say one adjective at a time, culminating in that.

Gollum totally sucked in the trailer. So not the character Tolkien wrote. Bilbo looked like he was bored to death and just wanted to get out of there, and Smeagol was just too peppy and upbeat through everything we seen in the trailer. I could see Gollum being depressed or sad in the beginning and getting angrier as the scene plays out but this whole Smeagol happy bouncy character is a total failure in my opinion. I thought the scene of him in the first trailer coming over the rock shrouded in shadow was kind of cool but this well lit, peppy happy Gollum is totally not the murdering antisocial being that lived in Tolkien's book

oh, just shut up... the trailer was great, Bilbo was great, we just didn't see that much of him. And Gollum was cute. Maybe the visitor (a hobbit, he recognizes) brought out the cute and curious smeagol. Gollum is the reason he's alive, he kills. and please don't start with "but he isn't split it two!" would you really expect them to go any different with him after lotr? wish-thinking.

Perhaps Norc but when loking to an adaptation of a favourite book should it really be 'wish-thinking' to hope it follows something, anything from the book that actually happens?

They obviously didn't think it thru. Gollum in FOTR is keeping to the shadows and is looking rather dangerous. This happy Gollum is just awful and detracts from the Smeagol we see exactly when we should see him. Wishful thinking is a good thing when they are butchering a book that is your favorite and making characters that should be frightening a parody of themselves. because they want to highlight what technological advances they have made with him instead of showing the character the way the author wrote him. Gollum was a dangerous murderer who had hidden himself away for over 400 years. Like I said I could see borderline depression or some tense emotion but this happy Gollum is awful. NOTHING like what Tolkien wrote. But why would Peter Jackson want to copy Tolkien since we all know PJ does it better. PFFFFFT!!!! That a great joke. The trailer was alright but where is anything from the book? I seen somethings close to it but nothing from the actual book. Guess they never got the memo that an adaptation should include SOME of the book.

expect them to go by the book. in LOTR we get Smeagol and Gollum in the Hobbit we only get the Gollum personallity as it should be

The main difference seems to be in size- they look much bigger in FotR. Aragorn barely comes up to that trolls chest and he is standing closer to the camera.

bilbo is a hobbit? they're shorter.

I had thought to take that into account Norc!- same problem is there with Pippin who is between the trolls.
However it could just be the persepective its shot at.

Bilbo needs to want to hate Gollum or be scared enough to want to kill him, then realize that Gollum should be pityed just as he is about to do the deed of killing him. Anything less and the scene fails compared to the book. One simple burst of outrage isn't enough to get that across. Gollum should be menacing and scary not happy and friendly.

Okay, what planet have I been on for the last week that I missed this completely?

Well, what to say........

really worried....Jackson seems to be going for the ongoing epic (thorins voiceover seeming to play to this, as does the early angst of Gandalf, something that you never really ee in the hobbit) and it is awful. As mentioned already he seems to have misinterpreted childrens story as meaning the silliness and pratfalls of overplayed humour which jars really badly in the trailer with his other style. It may be better situated in the actual flm so I guess it is benefit of the doubt time on that.

Having said that I will no doubt enjoy this in the cinema, with a little suspension of my tolkien brain (I am resisting the urge to pick up the book and check the things I know are wrong) and getting back to pulling it apart after I've seen it.

By the way Thorin is not doing Scottish, just his natural Yorkshire!!!!!

And I don't like these open mines a la Moria... where is the fear brought on by only hearing the flapping of goblin feet.
