I'd forgotten about that Tin- dont tell me some of the dwarves will fly into battle on cold-drakes!!!

(I said it looked like a dragon rather than an eagle from its head- but it was too small for a dragon- but maybe not for a cold drake!)

That's a good point, Tin. The animatronic creature he seemed to be riding in the video looks a lot more like a giant eagle than a dragon to me. Maybe it's possible that Cold-Drake is the new name of one of the great eagles? [hoping]

Huh. The first picture looks a lot like a warg but I'm not sure about the second one. It could definitely be an eagle, and that would make sense. Dwarves riding dragons, on the other hand, makes no sense to me even in light of the changes we're aware of so far. I don't think PJ would add good dragons, that just doesn't seem like his style.

Dire wolves are prehistoric wolves that could kill mammoths. I'm guessing dire wargs can kill a mumakil.

Werewolves/werebeasts--we've gotta have 'em. Same with the vampires. Because it worked so well in the Twilight Sagas!
(of course Beorn is technically a werebeast, but somehow I don't think that's what they're implying.)

Orc Shaman--Maybe an Orc-Merlin for Azog/Bolg? I'm hoping it's just a game character with extra magic powers.

I don't recall any mention of when Smaug was born but I always imagined he must have been a couple centuries old when he first appeared. For what it's worth, Smaug describes himself as having been young when he first attacked the Lonely Mountain. I don't think 400 years old at the time of The Hobbit is an unreasonable age but I don't think Tolkien ever wrote much about dragon aging.

More worryingly is 400 years not about the amount of time Dol Guldur has been standing? If so is PJ somehow linking the two? Is Smaug Saurons pet dragon?

Dol Guldur had been around for much longer than 400 years. The Tale of Years records that Sauron established a base at Dol Guldur sometime before the year 1100 of the Third Age. That would make it nearly 2000 years old by the time of The Hobbit. However, Sauron had abandoned Dol Guldur during the Watchful Peace and only about 500 years had passed between his return and The Hobbit.
