Re: RIP
Such a shame I liked him, he was so--comfortable. Must have been a lovely time to be in his company.

What's amazing is
a) that name is in the books
b) they actually kept it for the film

Re: RIP
Not that the lyrics made any kind of sense but, I did like "Blockbuster " but then none of the songs made any sense. Suzie Quatro & her "can the can", what was that all about ? Who amongst us can decipher Chicory Tip's "Son of My Father" ?

Re: RIP
{{{ RIP Sir Ian Holm, aged 88.
Too many great films and produtions to mention that I have enjoyed with him in it to list, we of course wil always remember him here especially for his superb portrayal of Bilbo, and for his portrayal of Frodo in the BBC radio adaptation.
But so much more besides that he did that has brought joy to so many.
You shall be missed. }}

Re: RIP
Well, 88 is a pretty good time to go.
You know, I never felt entirely comfortable around Ian Holm. I think that's part of why Jackson liked him for Bilbo: Holm was able to act unnervingly changeable in his mood. Perhaps it was his role in Alien that made me distrust him, I do no know.
Anyway, RiP.
Edit: Actually it was probably watching LotR that made me uncomfortable around Holm. That stupid jump-scare in Rivendell.

Re: RIP
His mind was certainly firing constantly, and he could show all of it transparently. It was fun listening to the "hobbits" commentary on his every little move. Actors seem to watch each other like hawks.

Re: RIP
RIP Eddie Van Halen. Arguably a bigger influence on rock and metal guitatists than anyone else.
Re: RIP
I wouldn't go so far as to say bigger than anyone else. Jimmi Hendrix comes to mind. But definitely up there.

Re: RIP
I did say arguably....
Jimmy Hendrix redefined what are guitar could sound like. Van Halen redefined how it could be played!
There are plenty of others in there though, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, B.B.King, Joni Mitchell to name a few.

Re: RIP
That's interesting, I've never heard of Joni Mitchell being an influential guitarist. I may need to be educated. Haven't heard of Tony Iommi.

Re: RIP
Tony Iommi is the guitarist from Black Sabbath... one of the forefathers of heavy metal.
Joni was definitely a huge influence in the world of folk guitar. Probably more around her music than her technical guitar playing... although that was great too being one of the best finger-style players of her generation... but a huge influence on a lot of people after her.
A bit like Slash. He is not a technically great guitar player but is a huge influencer through music and his style.
There are not too many people that define guitar itself though... you could probably name 6 or 7 people that are in that category of which EVH and Hendrix are 2.

Re: RIP
Looking up Joni Mitchell I see that she used a lot of "open" tuning, and it's actually surprising that it's not more common because the standard guitar tuning just sucks on so many levels. She also did a lot of fingerpicking that sounds so natural you don't realize it was technically advanced. Sort of a muted guitar style that only guitar players would notice.
