I posted this 15 minute warm up video earlier for those who are not afraid of spoilers. Well, not spoilers really. But a bit of foreshadowing perhaps.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
So just finished the second book. And I'm rather enjoying it. More alterations from it in regards to the series though. Most I can understand from a storytelling perspective. Some I find a little harder to understand.
One thing I found rather interesting is how different the episode of the siege of Kings Landing turned out from the book. Praticularily as George RR Martin wrote the script for that television episode as well.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I haven't seen much of season two, so could you say (maybe in spoilers) how it was different?
A co-worker of mine has just recently started reading the book series (and hasn't seen the show, though he's heard of most of the big twists) and it's fun hearing what someone going on almost completely blind thinks. He's been keeping me posted since he knows I read the books a while back.

Ah, so you have just about caught up to the series then Lance. Not bad. Not bad.
I just started on book 3 myself.

I could try and do that, Eldo. I will just have to get my thoughts a bit straight first, as I've started on the third series and the third book. So my mind is a bit muddled as to exactly what is what at the moment. And I have a feeling there are quite a few things to point out.
Generally I would say my reaction probably has something to do with my surprise at how close the first series and book stayed to each other. And there are certainly more changes, while a surprising amount of Georges dialogue still survives intact.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Well on my way through book 4, and I'm beginning to see why people consider this book inferior to the first three
- Book 4 spoilers:
- It's still a very good book, but it suffers badly from lack of really interesting characters, like The Onion Knight (did they really kill him? ), Stannis, Jon, Tyrion, The Hound, Beric Dondarrion. Arya has a very interesting storyline, but so far (and I'm about 60% through) she's only had one (or two?) chapters devoted to her. Cersei is interesting enough, but she's not 25% of the book interesting, like Tyrion was. Jaime is becoming a very likeable character, and so is Brienne, but neither of them are super interesting, and their chapters are slow. Actually, so far the most intriguing storyline is that of the Ironborn. I'm hoping the characters mentioed above will feature more frequently in book 5!

So I had a go and it became a bit of a ponderous tome, but here it goes..
There are of course a lot of differences betwen the series and the books and a lot of those are omissions. To simplify the story i n the series or for lack of time. Those I think are too many to mention, so I'll try to contain this to what I see as actual changes.
So in broad lines...
- Spoiler:
- The first major difference, I think, is the use of Rob Stark as a viewpoint character. This gives his character more depth and giveshis fate even more of an impact. The woman he marries is a different character from the one in the book, probably because they wanted to flesh out the character more as the series spends more time with Rob. All the scenes with Rob and Catelyn take place in camps and Riverun isn't introduced until the third series. As such Jamie Lannister escapes camp killing his cussin who was sent as en envoy and one of Lord Carstarks sons. Catelyn let's him go after he is recaptured and him and Brianne travels alone towards Kings Landing.
As for Renly and Stannis the whole Storms End situation is left out or only mentioned, and the shadow creature Mellisandre gives birth to kills Renly, not the castellan of Storms End, in his tent. They still row up to a cave and let the creature through some metal bars which has me wondering if they at some point planned on including the Storms End bit. Roberts bastard at Storms End is not mentioned or included.
Tyrions storyline is quite close to the one in the book, but both Shea and Bron are given larger roles. Bron is made the Lord commander of the city watch, leaving out Jacelyn. And Shea is Sansas handmaiden, not Lady Lollys Stokeworth. Shea also spends her time in the Red Keep not in a house in the city, as far as I remember. The whole Tommen situation is left out. And as far as I remember a lot of the details of the alliance with Dorne is left out.
As for Aria she spends her time at Harrenhall as Tywin cupbearer, not Boltons. I think this plays a large role in making Tywin a more relatable character, together woth Charles Dance performance, in the series than in the books. And they escape Harrenhal before the Northeners capture it. Which Roose Bolton and Rob Stark does together after it's been abandoned.
As for Bran and Rickon. The Iron Islanders capture Winterfell as in the book, but neither the Frey children or Jojen and Meera are present. There is no battle betwen the Northern lords in front of Winterfell and Ser Rodrik is killed by Theon after being captured by the iron islanders outside the castle. The castle is captured as the iron islanders turn on Theon leaving him to the Northerners outside the gate before fleeing. Bran and Rickon do not seperate at Winterfell but the whole group travel north together and meet Jojen and Meera on the way north.
The Daenerys stuff is quite close, but there was added some stuff about Xaro Xhoan Daxos aiding in the teft of the dragons, leading to the death of a good deal of the Dortraki and coming to a sticky end left locked in an empty vault beneath his house that he used as security for his fortune. (People obviously believing the vault was anything but empty.)
In the attack on Kings Landing Stannis attacks only with ships and there is no host on the other side of the river. His force is broken on the beach outside the walls of the Mud Gate while trying to break into the city. The Sansa bit from the battle in the book is followed quite closely, except for Shea now being her handmaiden.
That's what I've got at the moment at least, might have forgotten some things.

Thanks, Blue! That's interesting, especially the Robb stuff. I recall reading that they'd
It makes me curious to watch more of seasons two and three now.
- Spoiler:
- given him a different wife in the TV series.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yes, I feel his inclusion as a viewpoint character was a rather good idea.
And I think Richard Madden portrays him very well.
- Spoiler:
- You see the whole war a bit from the backseat with Catelin in the books, you get the wedding and it gives his fate a whole lot more impact. (They might very well have taken some pleasure in the last part. I certainly wouldn't put it past them. )
And I think Richard Madden portrays him very well.

- I dont understand the part where the Hound tries to make Sansa leave Kings Landing with him, I dont understand why she stayed. That bit wasnt made very clear, maybe it is in the book

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
- Spoiler:
- Someone can probably answer that better than me. Though I agree it seemed a mistake up until the Red Wedding. Where would he have taken her after that?
There was someone else who planned getting her out of Kings Landing in the books, but I've not found out how that turned out yet.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
- Spoiler:
- Well, it's certainly something I've pondered too.
Strangely ending up with Tyrion, who might have been the last person she wanted, might have been a bit of a blessing in disguise.
