Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
- Spoiler:
- Ah, Braavos—that's the title I was missing. But she doesn't meet Jaqen there, at least not in his guise at Harrenhal.

- Spoiler:
- Jaqen is a great character, it would be a shame if he doesnt reapear in his old form, I liked the way the actor made him seem ruthless but yet sympathetic at the same time. and mysterious.

Well, that conversation I actually am staying out of.

I like that Halfwise hypothesis turned out to be wrong.
You can read everything up until your post. Helt trygt, jeg lover.
Everything after your post I would give a miss. I certainly will.
Apparently they are talking about what happens in book 4 and 5, and some series 4 stuff. Though I'm not really sure.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
So I just got through the first book. Having already seen the series I was of course aware of the story, but it was interesting none the less.
What rather surprised me is how close they stayed to the book in adapting the series and how much of the original dialouge actually survived unchanged. Except for using some different viewpoint characters and other minor alterations there wasn't much they changed in adapting it. The book is of course still a whole lot more detailed than the series.
A bit of a shock after the Hobbit.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I noticed the dialogue too. thats something I noticed immediately in the tv series.
- Spoiler:
- the part where Bronn and Tyrion have escaped the Eyrie and are wandering the wilds before they get attacked by the wild men of the Woods, is pretty much word for word from the book. it was a pleasant surprise.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yes. And as I was rewatching the series as well as I was going through the book the surprising amount of dialogue that's taken straight from the book was very clear. And it's all over the place.
Getting in to the second book and series now so will be interesting to see if they start deviating more.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Well, this sounds very promising I wonder what they'll do when they've filmed book 5 (or 6) and Martin still hasn't completed the series. Will they make the rest up or wait? Hmm hmm

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Both Bronn and Shae have been more developed in the series than in the book. I think having Martin still around both means they are more faithful, and when they deviate it's done with his approval. He seems pretty happy with the changes so far.
- Spoiler:
- For Figgy - Tyrion discovers Shae with his father, hence leading him to kill both of them. This shows that it's not true that he never had strong feelings for her in the book. I think he's so desperate to have a woman actually like him that he consciously lets himself get drawn in by what he knows is probably a sham. I don't think he would have killed her if he hadn't started to actually believe that she had true fondness for him.
Then again she was also collateral damage for the rage he felt for his father. The series never brought out a constant theme in the book: Tywin's public contempt for Tyrion's prostitute habit. That in the end Tywin would do the same thing drove Tyrion into a blind rage. I'm not sure anyone in the room could have survived it.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yes, and I think George have talked about sitting in on script meetings. So I think any deviations and additions are done with his approval and a lot probably also under his guidance.
So some of the additions with new viewpoint characters perhaps adds to the story of the books.
Though the series cuts part of the book story too, of course.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
- Spoiler:
- I really hope that the series changes this, because Shae is genuine and really loves Tyrion, she risks her life to stay with him and has already tried to get Tyrion to run away with her. She also seems to despise the Lannisters, the only way she would go with Tywin is if he forced her as he thought her a common prostitute, she may do it to save Tyrion and then he discovers them together by accident. It could be an awful accident rather than deliberate betrayal. Anyway i hope they change this and Shae doesnt die. Really its getting a bit of a cliche that everyone who we like sooner or sooner gets nixed.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I find that kind of hard to answer, which I guess is kind of the point of the series. There's not meant to be a main character.
I did love the Ned Stark character. And Sean Bean was great as him.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Just saw the trailer for the new series, and the main thing I thought is "what damnably sucky music for this series!" Inappropriate, more like for a Jane Austin movie.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Is it series 4? I am just about getting to the end of A Clash of Kings.... is that the end of series 2 or does it flow a little differently? I haven't watched any of the series as yet.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yes, the TV series goes at a different pace than the books. The end of season 3 leaves a lot of things unresolved that book 3 reveals.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Ok... so I could watch the first 3 series and only be on book 2? Or would series 3 be getting in to book 3?
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
It's kind of mixed up but it's most or much of book 3 with some choice revelations left off till next season (presumably). Also, while it's behind in many plot threads, season 3 also actually has a bit from book 5.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
The parallels are getting messed up because the show is introducing changes to the story and also because it runs more chronologically than the books, but very roughly it goes:
Season 1: A Game of Thrones (first book)
Season 2: A Clash of Kings (second book)
Season 3: roughly the first half of A Storm of Swords (third book)
Season 4: roughly the second half of A Storm of Swords
But as Radaghast notes, this comparison is imperfect, so if you're concerned about spoilers I wouldn't risk watching the series just yet.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
From what I've gathered, the 9th or 10th episode of season 3 shows a very dramatic scene from about midway through book 3, so there's still a lot left of the third book when S3 ends. I've decided to read all the books currently published before I watch the series, to be on the safe side I'd like to keep my own images for as long as I can as well.

I agree, though this may no longer be an option in a couple of years when the series gets ahead of the point in the story where the books currently are.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, I guess the show will catch up with the books too fast. I hope they don't, but given Martin's pace at the moment it seems more than likely that it will.
