{{{ Ah well no you see, the reason thats a long CRABBIT drunken tale is because I was drunk and the tiger ended up the crabbit one, and down an eyeball. But that's a tale maybe for another time (once the Halfy in Boots one is done- which it will be eventually! -I was toying with sending the good characters of Forumshire off on a Jungle Adventure in search of the Lost Golf Course of Aargh-Eee and the possible location of Tinuviel, Queen of Forumshire (Missing Presumed Golfing). Yeah, forumotion.com was down as well.
Apparently; "Today, the forums met a technical problem independent of our will, and related to one of our providers.
Our teams quickly did their utmost to put an end to this interruption as quickly as possible. The gradual return of services is in progress, with some slowdowns and maintenance pages still visible until a total return."
I wonder if this means that their tech now has free will.

They will be getting a stern letter from the Admin's office. Once we dig out Blue from underneath the paper mountain, of course. He's not at all difficult to find, just follow the red tape.

I got a warning that this site has an expired certificate, and my browser wanted to keep me away. I don't know if we can fix this or if it's forumotion, but this definitely falls under scheduled maintenance.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
It means the site's SSL certificate (which is related to the HTTPS encryption we got with the forum upgrade over the summer) expired but if you check now we have a new certificate just issued today, presumably in the last hour or two, after halfy's and Petty's posts.
ETA: actually, looking closer now that I'm not on my phone, the certificate seems to have been issued earlier in the morning (8:46:37 AM EDT, or 13:46:37 BST), so if this problem persists for anyone I advise clearing your browser cache as your browser may still have the old certificate stored and be trying to check against that. If that doesn't work either then escalate beyond me, preferably to the Forumotion help forum.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
I make increasing use of dark themes these days so that nighttime browsing is easier on my eyes, and I'm currently trying out a Google Chrome extension that creates impromptu dark themes for sites as you visit them. It's a fairly blunt instrument, of course, but I'm generally pretty pleased with the results on most sites. It doesn't get along well with the rounded corners on here but I like the color palette it translated things to. Makes hyperlinks stand out much better than in the regular theme, at least at the very low screen brightness I typically use.

the worst for me is a black background with white lettering, its awful. I remember one forum used it and after reading for 5 minutes I had this weird imprinting on my retina for minutes afterwards. and a headache. never used it again.

Make that exactly six weeks now (by GMT, anyway, where it's already Monday).
I'm not sure how much new I can say about forum history at this point but this almost exactly coincides with the 10th anniversary of my becoming active in online Tolkien fandom so, if I can get it into a shape I'm satisfied with, I might try to post a more personal reflection on the Forumshire experience and what it's meant to me. I wrote something for our fifth anniversary ("Forumshire: The First Five Years") and ten years kinda feels even more significant, though we're obviously much less active these days. Not sure if this milestone means anything to anyone else but I thought I'd mention it so people at least know it's coming up, in case anyone else wants to do anything for it.
