That young Eldo is a scurrolous untruth!! You refer to so called 'real world' Buckfast. Banghead
Buckie is made in Scotshobbitland, contains extra ingredients, such as 0.005% miruvor and is brewed by wizards, not a bunch of monks!!

Read the labels next time!

Buckfast label:

Buckie label:

See compleltely different.

Yes, I'm sure the Scotsdale wizards are hard-working and honest enough not to just slap those labels on imported bottles and trust Scotshobbits to be too drunken not to know the difference. Absolutely convinced of it. Rolling Eyes

Hmm... there was a clan called the Firebeards!

Tolkien noted some tucking and binding of beards: for example Dwalin's beard was so long it could be tucked into his belt, and Dain's folk had beards forked and plaited and thrust into their belts. In The Book of Lost Tales the beards of the Dwarves: 'reach even to their toes, but the beards of the Indrafangs are the longest of all, and are forked, and they bind them about their middles when they walk abroad.'

So Tolkien seems quite aware that long beards could get in the way. Not that anyone said he wasn't!

Anyway, just a little beard-Tolkien-dwerrows trivia, injected into whatever this thread is about.

So what you're saying, Elthir, is "when in doubt trust the Master of Middle Earth." Excellent commonsense - and respectful to the Author. What a conscientious and respectful person you are! Nod

And Petty, in an earlier post on this "General Everything Thread" (also called "Movie Trailer #1" or similar), you said something about "dull" songs. You weren't meaning the Wizard of Oz songs, were you? I only bring it up because a comment like that would show you up as a buffoon, a dope, and a Forumshire freak-Philistine! Mad

I assume you are referring to this in reply to Eldo, Orwell;

'I shall indeed say what I like Eldo and that includes thinking the music is a bit dull and nowhere near varied enough for the different races.'

In which case I was talking about Howard Shores score for LotR's. Its nowhere near imaginative enough for my tastes or varied enough. Had it been me hiring the composer I would have got a different one for each race.

"injected into whatever this thread is about."- Elthir

Its about 8 pages of on topic discussion and several pages of entertaining nonsense Elthir- same as every other thread! Very Happy

Way more than that, actually. The top upload on YouTube has about 7.5 million views, but the other results on YouTube search's first page have another 4-5 million between them. That doesn't count all the views through other media, including the official site, ComingSoon.net, and especially iTunes Trailers. There's no telling what the total view count for the trailer is aside from "quite a bit". Cool

I'm not sure. It's hard to say because looking at view counts for older trailers doesn't show how fast they racked up their views. It does seem that the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises has met with a fairly lacklustre reception, but I'm sure trailers for a lot of previous blockbusters have seen similarily huge premieres to The Hobbit. I'm thinking the last Harry Potter movie, probably some of the Twilight movies, The Dark Knight from 2008, etc. But I don't know for sure.

I hadn't considered the lack of goblins in the trailer- good point as one presumes the Goblin bit is in the first film.

They didnt show us trolls either so I think they are leaving the "magical creatures" until we see the films. I remember how good the Orcs prosthetics/costumes/make up looked 10 years ago, imagine how good they will look next year?

I actually really liked that guy's list of stuff he wanted to see in the trailer, so let's see what he has to say this time...

Consistency is critical

All this character consistency reinforces the link-back to Jackson’s adaptation of the Lord of the Rings.

There’s also a consistency in the feel. Could that be why there are so many Hobbiton and Bag End scenes in this teaser? The use of the same text. The textual reinforcement that it’s the director of The Lord of the Rings.

There’s a certain consistency of lighting too. The scenes we think could be Dol Guldur have a similar light to Osgiliath. Rivendell’s light has the same pink-gold sunset look. Seeing Narsil? All about creating consistency.

Because consistency is all about delivering familiarity and comfort. Challenged audiences are unsettled ones. Most people being don’t enjoy being unsettled. And though most consider both installations of The Hobbit a surefire hit, the movies will need to sell an awful lot of tickets to cover the truly enormous sum the studios have invested.

Wow. Rolling Eyes

Obviously PJ is trying to create consistency with LOTR, but this dude's attempt at not only justifying that but saying it is critical is so awful it's hilarious. Audiences that aren't spoon-fed the same exact kind of movie are "unsettled" and therefore risk the success of the franchise? Setting aside the fact that the guy drastically undersells the brand power of Middle-earth films, his advice is essentially to dispense with artistic integrity or courage and just stick to formula. The greatest irony is that if PJ had followed this advice back in the '90s, he would never have made LOTR in the first place, since fantasy epics were neither familiar nor comfortable to general movie audiences at that point in time.

Again, it’s about consistency. And, maybe, about sympathy. You don’t want your audience feeling too sorry for the bad guys, right?

Can anyone who writes for a Tolkien-oriented blog actually think this? Has he ever heard of Gollum? Or Denethor? The most interesting and engaging villains tend to be the ones who you can understand and to some disagree sympathize with. I'm not even sure what the point of that article is anymore. An appeal for crass, money-driven, simplistic, black-and-white morality movies?

(((There, rant over. Laughing)))

I totally agree with your points Eldo about that guys ideas, maybe toddlers need comfort, but adults get bored when everything is predictable. I like what he said about the lighting though, Dol guldur did remind me a lot of Osgiliath, it was so similar what with those stone statues in the background I was going to mention that it could be osgiliath, but I wonder if it could be possible that Gandalf went there, hmm maybe not.
