....and by the way, Wizard of Oz was a huge box office failure when it came out. It wasn't until it came around in re -release 10 years later that it showed a profit.

Never read the Oz books but whilst there is someone here who has Ive always wondered, is the second film Return to Oz (I think)), made much later, any closer to the books? I have always preferred it to Wizard of Oz as a film.

Some of the characters are more recognizable, but in the end it's a confusing Disney mash-up of 3 or 4 books rather than a MGM saccharine musical "adaptation" of one. So pick your poison. The original books are IMO brilliant id-driven fairy tales and deserving of better treatment.

David H wrote:Sure, a brilliant kid's movie from the hand of a brilliant kid's director would be brilliant... but that's not our PJ, is it? All I'm saying is he's playing to his fan base, and by doing so he's guaranteed to pay his bills at the box office and make a profit on DVD sales.

While I largely agree with Orwell, I have to agree with this too. (I'm just a flip-flopping liberal at heart, aren't I? Razz) But like I said earlier, I don't think PJ could pull off the balance of making a children's movie with both heart and action and spectacle. I think that PJ can be good at making the kind of movies he does (spectacle-heavy blockbusters along with early comedies) but he struggles with deeper material. King Kong also went way overboard with spectacle, but that's a topic for another thread.

Good luck to him, I say. I'm expecting the theatrical cut to disappoint me, being mostly edited for flash-and-bang like LotR's first cut, but I hope he'll put more story back into it for an extended DVD cut (I'm still hoping he follows through on a 25 year edit of LotR and that he hires Petty as an assistant editor).

It's been so long since I've seen the LOTR theatrical editions that I don't really recall just how much was added to them later, but the differences I do recall were almost all major weaknesses on the part of the theatrical versions. I don't think that the potential presence of an Extended Edition excuses weaknesses in the theatrical cut (I'm not saying you think that either), but it does give something more to look forward to. Although I wonder just how much he'll have to invent to fill out EEs. FOTR and TTT were both about three hours long, so if AUJ and TABA follow that pattern there's already six hours of material based on a fairly short book. Perhaps that will actually give PJ more room to include more of the story as well as his precious spectacle in the original cuts.

Like I said, don't get me started!

I've got two copies of the book - I couldn't get into either. I guess I was spoiled by seeing the movie - and loving it. My kids even got me a dvd of the movie last Christmas! Sheer joy! (It's the only time I can safely say I liked my children - momentarily Very Happy ).

If I could interupt the buckie squabble for a mo.

Poll here for the best tolkien film song that has been done so far, bit silly but does have the song from the trailer as a header.

By the way, in all your ranting about JRR being missing from the trailer credits, did you notice that when they show - from the producer of lord of the rings it is over the part of the map that shows the desolation of Smaug? seemed poetic to me Very Happy

I'm not sure why they bothered including the songs from the animated movies on that poll. Other than Where There's a Whip There's a Way, that song is badass! Very Happy But there's some tough competition in the poll once they reach the songs from the Trilogy. Say what you like about the films, but the music is top-notch. Cool I think that Richard Armitage's rendition of Over the Misty Mountains Cold stands up to the competition, but I'm not sure if I'd put it at #1. I'll need to think on it more, though. Smile

I just want to put in my 2 cents for what its worth really, I noticed that Bilbo said to Frodo, I havent told you all the truth about what really happened on my adventure, so I presume that Bilbo in finally telling the "truth", will not gloss over the more unsavory bits, maybe he had told a very young Frodo a kind of fairytale, with talking trolls, etc, maybe what really happened was a lot more prosaic and bloody, like trolls that didnt engage in polite conversation but just wanted to squish you before eating you. Hense a Hobbit film that is darker harsher and not so fluffy. As to the dwarves, the only ones that to me are truly dwarvish are Gloin and Oin.

Yeah, that's the biggest problem with popular movie adaptations, isn't it? Lots of people who say, "I loved 'Lord of the Rings' but I just couldn't get into the books. They're too dry and wordy, and besides they got the characters all wrong!" Suspect

Don't get me wrong, I loved "Wizard of Oz" the movie as a kid. I first read "Marvelous Land of Oz" because I wanted more of the story, and it satisfied what I was looking for. If you'd like to try Baum's Oz without getting disillusioned it's a good place to start.

It was only later that I went back and read "Wonderful Wizard of Oz". It wasn't until then that I became a cynical and what you folks call crabbit 11 year old.

It's hard to measure how much pleasure I've derived over the years since then by telling people how much their favorite movie sucks! Twisted Evil

I shall indeed say what I like Eldo and that includes thinking the music is a bit dull and nowhere near varied enough for the different races.
Whilst I'm in crabbitt mood too the 'Tolkien' songs in that poll from the PJ films have got bugger all to do with Tolkien other than being in PJ's film!! Evil or Very Mad They should all be disqualified on those grounds.

They do call them Tolkien-inspired songs for a reason, and it's clearly a poll about Tolkien-based movies, not songs from the original books. Wink

Yep! The lyrics are actually taken from Aragorn's coronation oath in the book, but set to music by Viggo Mortensen. I think it's quite a nice effect. It's a change from the book, but a minor one that does a good job of utilizing the power of musical scores, which is an innate difference between books and movies. Smile
