For the last few weeks several reports have come in from different parties about the future of Scotlands oil fields.
An oil industry report produces three sets of figures- a high figure, a middle figure and a worse case figure becuase of the volitility of oil prices.

The SNP then produced their report and they used the mid range figure. And said the levels of industry commitment in investment pointed to the next 50 years of oil being more profitiable than the last.

The UK governnment then brought out their report, they used the worst case scenario figures. Rubbished the SNP claim and stuck to the Unionst line that oil is to volitile in price, it is to expensive to expand into more tricky to get fields and it will run out anyway before to long.

Now today- this happened-

A consortium of oil companies is to invest more than $500m (£330m) in an appraisal drilling programme which could lead to further development of a giant Atlantic field.
The BP-led consortium said drilling had already started on the first of five wells planned over the next two years at Clair, west of Shetland.
Up to 12 wells could be drilled, depending on initial results.
The news came as the UK government unveiled a new oil and gas strategy.
It is the latest in a series of announcements, aimed at transforming the Atlantic's role as an oil-producing region.
Clair is already known as a "monster" field, holding eight billion barrels of oil.
Last year, BP announced a further huge expansion.
The company and its partners hope the appraisal programme will lead to a third phase, taking production well beyond 2050.
New oil would continue to be pumped by pipeline to Shetland.
Analysts believe that Clair - along with other developments in the area - could lead to the Atlantic overtaking the North Sea as the UK's biggest oil-producing region within 20 years.
Meanwhile, the new oil and gas strategy aimed at securing thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment was unveiled by UK Business Secretary Vince Cable in Aberdeen, which is known as the oil capital of Europe.
He addressed business leaders alongside Scottish Secretary Michael Moore and UK Energy Secretary Ed Davey.
The three secretaries of state outlined plans for "tax certainty", supply chain support and skills development.
Mr Cable, who opened a facility at offshore specialists Expro in Aberdeen, said: "I want us to consider what barriers are stopping British companies bidding for and winning work in the North Sea. This is an expanding industry. We can either help create more jobs and opportunities across the UK if we get this right, or see work going overseas if not."
The oil and gas industry employs about 400,000 people and provides nearly half the UK's energy needs, the government said.
The strategy states that government will work with the industry to tackle a looming skills shortage, partly by re-training military leavers to fill some of the 15,000 new jobs expected to be created in the oil and gas sector over the next five years.- BBC


Ok- so are the UK government saying we dont have enough oil and gas to be independent and secure and it will run out soon?
Or are they saying there's loads more to get at yet, record investment in it by the private sector and it provides a lot of jobs and will last for a good bit yet?

Or we only supposed to listen to them when they tell us they are adressing us and ignore what they when talking to England? I dont get it?

The Department of Energy and Climate Change report said 14,600 Gigawatt hours were generated in Scotland from renewables such as wind and hydro.
The Whitehall department said this represented more than a third of the UK's total renewables output in 2012.
The Scottish government said it had generated enough electricity to power the equivalent of every Scottish home.
The amount generated also represented 39% of Scotland's total electricity needs.
The DECC figures showed that wind generation in Scotland was 8296 GWh, up 19% on 2011, and more than four times the level in 2006.
By the end of 2012, there was 5,883 MW of installed renewable electricity capacity in Scotland, an increase of 22% from the end of 2011.
Scottish government Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said Scotland's contribution to the UK's renewable output demonstrated the importance of Scotland's role in helping the UK meet EU renewable energy targets.
He said: "We remain firmly on course to generate the equivalent of 100% of Scotland's electricity needs from renewables by 2020 - with renewables generating more than enough electricity to supply every Scottish home."

Mmmm. So we have lots of oil, but we can sell all that pretty much as we can generate enough power for everyone with wind and wave. And its still an expanding sector evey year.
But yet apprently we couldnt be self sufficient. Something is not right here.

That is the new technique developed by a Scottish research team, a technique which could help patients with spinal injuries grow new bone.
They call it "nanokicking".
Persuading stem cells to become bone has been done in the laboratory before. But existing techniques typically involve complex and expensive engineering or cocktails of chemicals.
The Scottish team, drawn from the universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and the West of Scotland, is instead mimicking a natural process - when broken bones need to knit, they vibrate.
We're using lasers to try to measure the amount of kicking that we're giving to the stem cell cultures," he says.
"Here we're using the wavelength of light to be our metre stick to measure the kicks down to nanoscale levels."
"If you take one cell and blow it up to the size of a football, then the amount we're shaking the cells is the same as sliding one sheet of paper in and out from the bottom."
The team are already co-operating with Glasgow's Southern General Hospital in the hope that one day we may see patients with spinal injuries being nanokicked to recovery."- BBC Scotland


See amazing what getting crabbit can do! I can magine the scene as the scientists get more and more frustrated until after one buckie to many one of them says "have you tried just kicking the little bastsrds into doing it?"

Right now Cameron is trying to convince us spending a squillion, billion quid on replacing our nuclear weaponry and keeping them all within 70 miles of Scotlands densist populated area is in order to stop N Korea attacking us!

Today ‘Better Together’ disclosed £1.1 million of donations to its campaign. Almost half of that sum came from one man: Ian Taylor, a long-term Conservative Party donor and Chief Executive of oil-traders Vitol plc.

Today’s Sunday Herald described Taylor as “a Scots oil trader with a major stake in the Harris Tweed industry”. They also gave Taylor’s views – who is reportedly worth £155 million – print space to justify his funding decision.

This raises several concerns. Taylor, according to The Sunday Herald, is not registered to vote in Scotland. This breaks Electoral Commission guidelines for general elections, which Yes Scotland has promised to follow. Secondly, Ian Taylor has given £550,000 to the Conservative Party since 2006. This is a further case of Tory donors – and their political interests – bankrolling the ‘no’ campaign.

Quite right too otherwise might be an accident, you could spill your buckie!

I mean it pokes at least as much fun out the Scots- the mag he reads is called Scottish Stuff- subscribe and you get a fee sporran (Obviously I already subscribe)

People think that ad is racist against English people? Huh? I mean, it's clearly riffing off the age-old stereotype of the overprotective dad, but if you want to read any sort of racial/national message into it, let's consider what the most negative aspect of each portrayal is.

-- English people own farting dogs

Which is worse comes down to a matter of personal opinion, I guess.

I think the offence is that the Dad is offended his daughters boyfriend is english, and needs his irn bru to keep calm, as the boyfriend waves red rags at a bull- england won the world cup in 1966 and never shut up about it, his dog is a bull dog, an emblem of all things english ect

Well yeah, I got all that, but I guess I didn't think the ad was endorsing the dad's "racism". Mind you, I wasn't bothered by the ad; I'm just trying to make sense of why anyone would find it complaint-worthy.

No idea on why someone would find it complaint worthy let alone a few hundred someones but there you go. The English, once among the finest satirists the world has produced, cant see the funny side!
