Hasn't the Conservative government been issuing dire warnings about how hard it will be for Scotland to stay in the EU if it leaves the UK? I don't get what Cameron thinks his game is.

Problem is he is playing two different games now- and the latest one is not his own devising or choosing- but his back benchers.
The party lost councillors to UKIP, thats dangerous because thats your grass roots level of government.
And UKIP are popular becuase they are voicing a view about Europe that has always exisited in the Tory Party and appeals to Tory voters, who sometimes seem to still think we have an Empire- but under Cameron that wing wasnt expressed in policy or manifesto.

Last time the Tories were in power they lost power because of the huge fights and split in their party between the pro Europe and anti Europe wings. Cameron is more pro than anti- but he has clearly lost control of his party right now.
So keep his position he has to react to appease his own party- that just happens to contradict everything he has been saying to Scotland about the dangers of not being in Europe and having to be out for as long as it takes to get membership being a danger, and causing economicuncertainy ect.

Most people in the know however seem to think as Scotland has had European law and memership since the EU was created that the admissions process would be speedy and uncomplicated as we wouldn't be switching systems, just continung the exsiting ones.

What I dont get CC is last time the Tory party tore itself up over Europe it ws becuase there was an eqaul proeurope voice is in as anti- this looks much more dangerous for Cameron as it now sems the party has shifted to be much more anti-Europe and the only pro-euro Tories left are the party heads- they look isolated from their own members.
So if Cameron is proEurope (and I agree he is on that side of the party) then why did the rest of them (the majority anti Euope) elect him their leader in the first place?

Becoming the first member state of the EU to hold a referendum on leaving is not exactly in line with pro-EU views though.

I get that Cameron has been forced into this situation because of his party but IMO he just comes out of it looking weak. It's a victory for the backbenchers, but definitely not for Cameron.

i honestly think the dominance of the tory right is over stated, even with a tory majority in 2015 (which they won't get IMO) they won't be able to pass this through

he hasn't allowed anything, some tories are working on a draft but they'd still have to win a general election for it to be passed in the house of commons

i think cameron is doing well to keep his party happy, and that after all is arguably more important than keeping the public happy when you're a long way off the next election

No it wont get passed CC, Lab and lib dims will squash it in Commons, but if Cameron had any control over his backbenches it would never have come up either. Its a direct challenge on his leadership direction.
