Re: Music
I've worked out a good chunk of the piano version on guitar. Not sure what tuning I am in at the moment but most of the intro seems to be around the E or E# major scale (E# on my guitar, but I may not be in standard tuning right now).
My knowledge of scales and modes doesn't go far out of the major and blues scales though so not sure where some of the random notes come from.
(I bet you knew that by looking at the sheet music too)

I am sure that because it begins with a D it is probably also some funny mode like D Aeolian or something too.
Really should go and learn these things one day!
D, E, E#, G, E#, E, D, C?
Over D minor, A# (B), C, G minor?

Re: Music
Incidetally I was planningon using Audacity to edit it all together before doing the video for it.
Mainly as its a free propgram so every one can get it no problem and then we are all working for the same program for recording the music.
However it outputs in WAV format unless you get the mp3 converter addon.
Basically the WAV format would be better as it contains more information than an mp3- downside is WAV file size is notably larger than equivelent mp3.
So WAV or MP3 format?

Re: Music
i dunno if I'm gonna use audiacity, i'll probably do something.. erm.. a bit more fancy. but a video? perhaps? sound+video?
Re: Music
Well I can make a video for it- but if people also want to record themselves playing I can put that in the vid too.
I was going to give full access to my skydrive to anyone taking part- that way all the music parts can be uploaded to it ready to be assembeled into the finished piece.

Re: Music
I guess that depends on what you are going to do with the video. Are you going to mp4 that? If so we may as well mp3 the music as it will be compressed anyway.
Norc - are you sure? It sounded right when I played it. Maybe I just got my notes muddled up. I play by ear rather than actually having any idea what that means in musical official terms.
I will be recording in pro-tools so can export to whatever file format makes the mixing easy.

The vid I will do at least 720p if I use WHo footage.
So if your recording yourself for inclusion HD would be ideal (but not esential as I can upscale footage).
If I put it together in Audacity and transfer it to Adobe Premier pr for the video I should be able to produce the vi in surround sound rather than in stereo.
And I can put the wav files straight from audcity into premiere pro so th sound quality will be as high as possible.
So the final output file will be probably be a HD avi with surround sound.
And from there I can easily convert it to any other format anyone might want (withthe usual losses due to compression)

Nobody said anything about recording myself. Would have to do that without other people here if that was gonna happen. Might ruin my chav image too.
Re: Music
A bit confusing figuring out how you guys think you will be doing this.
I think if you play the video piano version into earphones, then play your part along with it to be recorded, everyone will be at the same pitch and rhythm. Then Petty can splice it all together. Is that what you are planning to do?
If I had time I'd put in some improvisational stuff on recorders. Likely won't happen. Anyway....the problem is the exact start time with the piano version: easy to join in once it's going, but nobody's counting off to get you started.

Thats why I suggested everyone use a metronome Halfy- to get the timing.
No pressure Lance to film yourself- its just an option for those who may want to.

Eldo - she may decide she doesn't want to come on to me once she has seen my face!
The timing shouldn't really matter. If everyone manages to start in time with the music then cutting within the music software will line everyone up.
We can either all play the same bits and jason can chop and change or we could try an arrangement of some kind. That may prove to be the hard bit!

Re: Music
Ive been thinking about an arrangment- and Im not sure it woudnt be easier to piece together once I have them all rather than set up individual parts. Unless someone wants to have a go at writing an arrangements.

Still a problem and a metronome won't solve it. If you want to play along with some video music in order to ensure that everyone is playing in time and pitch, the problem is that you don't know exactly when the video music will start. There's always some unknown lag time when you hit 'play'. If everyone jumps in afterwards then once you stitch it together you'll have a few seconds of silence then everyone jumping in at random times.
And no, I don't expect it will work if everyone is separately using metronomes and tuners to make sure rhythm and pitch sync up: you really need to be playing against something like the piano video in order to lock in to something you hear. The very best way would be for parts to be spliced in one by one, so that the next player is playing against all the previous players. It will never mesh if everyone is playing into a vacuum; it will sound mechanical rather than organic. At least playing against the piano video addresses this somewhat, if only you can figure out how to start with it.

if it sounds right, it probably is right, but your notes are wrong a E# is the same as an F

just vid the guitar strings, no need to have your face with i'll be wearing a paper bag.
Re: Music
Not sure why a metronome wouldnt solve the problem of timing Halfwise- if everyone starts playing their piece and recording, say on the fourth beat of the metronome and then keeps its pace throughout then everyone should be in unison.

only problem. the piano version only has one base and one melody. I suggest people try the violin version (can be played on other instruments and it doesn't have an odd key (i can't read it)) as it has more parts (three). there is one more rythmy and one with more melody.
we might need a musician for this.

yes, but it's not the same, for pace yes, but not for starting at the same point. that's important too.

yes, somehow that might work as there are different "parts" withing the song, but! pace and what arrangement we choose is important.

yepp, that is the hard bit. i am not arranging anything, too much work... well.. but i can help out as it seems i know something about how stuff work.
(i have an orchestra piece of i am the doctor, with four different (more or less) vioin pieces, two (more or less) different viola, two violincello, and double bass. (it's 62 pages, where can i upload the pdf?)
